It’s November 1956. The world is in turmoil, the Suez Crisis and the Hungarian Uprising boiling away in the background. Lennox, though, has more immediate concerns, like getting his personal life and his business back on track. In a bid to stay out of trouble, he’s looking for more legitimate cases. Anything’s better than working for the Three Kings, the crime bosses who run Glasgow’s underworld.

When a woman comes into his office and hires him to follow her philandering husband, it seems the perfect case. Straightforward, typical and, most of all, legal. As he begins to dig deeper, Lennox realizes this is no simple case of marital infidelity. He finds himself caught by the police in a room with a dead body, pursued by shadowy members of the intelligence community, and the people he’s been tracking start to track him. In the thick of it once more, Lennox has to draw on the violent, war-damaged part of his personality that he tries to keep buried as he follows a trail of dead men and broken hearts.

I really enjoyed all four of these audio books. I'm now officially a Sean Barrett fan, he narrates this type of novel so spot on. I couldn't put these down I didn't talk to hubby for over a week. So hope there will be more. Without giving anything away would love to hear the aftermath if his private life. So more more more please.

Didn't read the print version.

Possibly. I read his Deep Dark Sleep first and I'm afraid this does not come up to the same standard.

Sean Barrett is a brilliant reader. I would try almost any book if I saw he was narrating it.

Craig Russell keeps going fro strength to strength. I love Lennox and Fabel both great characters. In Dead men and broken hearts Lennox is still trying to distance himself from the gangland side of Glasgow in the 1950's. Trouble is never far away and Lennox no matter how hard he tries is a magnet for trouble. This time it could be one case to many as Lennox contemplates returning to his homeland of Canada but can he survive long enough to do so?

This is the second Craig Russell book I've listened to. He is a master of time & place and his descriptions of people show incredible insight into the best and worst of the human race. There is not a word missed or a sentence unnecessarily embellished. Sean Barrett's reading is the icing on the cake. BRAVO!
