Summary

A sweltering summer day on the Hobfield housing estate. New tenant Lisa Woodley is horrified when her cat comes home with a human foot in its mouth.

The foot belongs to 16-year-old Noah Crosby, whose decomposing remains are found in a rubbish-strewn alleyway. It’s not a robbery, as the teen has an expensive gold watch, high-end trainers and a top-of-the-range mobile phone on him. Where did he get such expensive gear?

A letter X is carved into Noah’s flesh. Twenty years ago this was the hallmark of a serial killer who was never caught.

Is he back killing again?

Detective Tom Calladine and his partner DS Ruth Bayliss reach a dead end. People are scared. No one will talk.

Then Tom’s new girlfriend’s shop is targeted — and it’s clear she’s not telling him the whole truth about the attack. Just what is she hiding?

Can Tom and Ruth get answers before the murderer strikes again?

Change of voices

Love love love Jonathan Keeble's narration and his myriad of voices. However, I cannot fathom what made him change DCi Greco's well-spoken public school-type accent to that of a generally lazy voice over the last two books. Si,ilRly, he changed the voice of DC Alice from well spoken London to a northern accent.
I have to say that these two things spoiled the experience for me.

Loved it!

Two Calladine and Bayliss books released on Audible on the same day. What's a girl to do other than listen to them back to back!

This time the team are investigating a series of murders and the theft of some very expensive trainers. The book is well written and fast paced and I was so engrossed that I listened in one session! Calladine's love life gets even more messy in this one, though Bayliss is more settled. Can't wait for Book 13!

Expertly narrated by Jonathan Keeble!

Jonathan Keeble - Narrator

I have thoroughly enjoyed all 12 of these Helen Durrant books - DCI Calladine & Bayliss. Listened to all 12 in a row!! However, these stories were each brought to life by the excellent narration of Jonathan Keeble - he sets the audio narrative standard. How he manages to remember all the different voices for each character is beyond me - a first class narrator who, in my opinion, is yet to be bettered or beaten.
Have thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in all the books - very well-written and thought out with totally believable plots. Would highly recommend.

Gentle bumble through unrealistic policing

I think I might read any more of these as the narrator isn’t really to my taste. He voices Ruth as constantly sniping and angry and I worry why she’s so unhappy with her lot.
I don’t think detectives would go off on their own on a gut instinct and not share details of the suspect with colleagues.
Ignore that and the stories are a good way of passing the time when cleaning up

Always a little bit different

I like the way that Helen writes her stories and the interactions between the characters. Jonathan is a great narrator and does a brilliant job of bringing the characters to life.
