A very good zombie story, fascinating to follow, well written, with mostly interesting characters. There's nothing new in the story but it's an enjoyable if somewhat bleak read.

I really enjoyed this book!

The story builds and maintained a sense of menace and bleak desperation whilst maintaining the most contrite of human emotion, that of perpetual hope, hope of an end, a solution, hope for a brighter day.

I love that there are no clear cut 'good guy' characters, each has their own flaws making them feel very real and very human in a horrific setting.

The conclusion of the story is no real conclusion at all and we as readers/listeners are left to fill in the blanks, so depending on your personal outlook the bleakness of the ending can vary.

I loved seeing the progression of the virus, the way it lept in unexpected ways, animals that seemed to be immune no longer being so and the deverstation this wreaks. The idea of the ocean becoming a battle ground between living and undead/zombie animals is its own level of horrific and an aspect of the zombie virus deverstates the world i havent seen explored much within the genre, and yes, the image of a zombie shark is something that stays with you for a while.

The deaths are gruesome for characters and zombies alike and give a strangely even playing field in consideration of how shocking each scene can be.

The narration style was perfectly suited to the genre and definitely added to the enjoyment of the book.

This was definitely not what i expected very deep character growth and attention to details with a broad range of personalities to them it really has healthy investment in the depth of each person especially the main character very very gory parts that dont hold back on details so definitely not one for the faint of heart but if you want a rich and deep story that has lots of horror and gore then this is probably something you will love like i did the best way to express this is its like the walking dead meets a stephen king thriller it doesn't end on a soft note either without any spoilers it leaves the door open for a follow up novel but its also only leaving the door open a fraction so im not expecting a follow uo but if there was one in the works it could carry on pretty easily all in all its a good string story good character development and the narrator does a spot on job i was very pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed it

I really liked this book. It leans towards the more psychological aspects of dealing with the zombie apocalypse, rather than focusing strictly on fighting zombies and survival strategise. I liked all the main characters who had well developed stories and personalities. Speaking of which Leroy is a great character who sees himself as a bad person and is depected as an antihero, but actually ends up surprising himself. There is some unsavoury language, but it only really covers a short section at the beginning of the book and didn't distract me from the story.

I absolutely loved Ron Butler's narration which is something I haven't said about a narrator in a long time. But I enjoyed his narration, he definitely brought the story to life and I will be looking to read other audiobooks he's narrated in the near future.

All the tired zombie tropes are here. The idea of aquatic zombies was cool but the author didn't do anything with the idea.

Having read this book back in 2007 when it was first published it's been an absolute joy to revisit 16 years later. There are certain scenes that left an indelible mark upon my memory and have remained some of the best of the zombie genre out there. Keene really is a master when it comes to visceral horror with plently gut munching, brain bursting portrayals of violence scattered throughout the fast paced narrative. But gore isn't the only thing he excels at. His characters are deep, believable emotional beings that you'll connect with on a primal level. Each individual could be someone you know, perhaps a friend or work colleague. Ultimately, they are believable.

Ron Butler's narration is superbly fluid with no noticeable gaps in quality that sometimes plague audiobooks. His individual character voices are easily recognisable with no confusion between them.

This is a not part of The Rising, some reviewers seems to have missed that point, these are 'normal' zombies, not demon posessed bodies, let's just be clear here. So, having established that, let me begin .... Lamar is wonderful, and the narrator is too, Lamar is, according to the 'Professor' an archetypal hero and I'd have to agree, along with Malik and Tasha who save his life early on, whom he then rescues fom the fire and takes to the boat, he's joined by Mitchell, who is also a good guy, they make a great team and the kids are wonderful, I love the whole lot of them.

I did not like the decision to make the virus affect animals too, but again, let's be clear, not ALL animals, for no particular reason, only certain animals are affected, no scientific rhyme or reason, squirrels being immune at the start and then not, also weird, maybe they were just good at hiding from the rats, who knows, I was not keen on this bit, hence only 4 stars from me.

I loved this, I think you will too if you're a Keene fan, try it for yourself, see what you think.
