About this listen
The complete 8-book zombie apocalypse series, Dead South, is now available!
The Dead Can't Bury the Truth...
Three years after an incurable virus spread and turned a majority of the population into mindless and cannibalistic creatures, the world is a barren place. Society is broken, and most who remain have banded together in small camps and communities.
Jon South is not like most other survivors.
After losing his wife and son nearly two years into the pandemic, Jon now wanders the country roads and woods of rural Tennessee, a vigilante taking his revenge out on the undead monsters that took his family from him. He lives in solitary, and with nothing more to live for, he plans to die alone, sooner rather than later.
But after coming to the aid of a pair of strangers out in the woods being attacked by men, Jon learns that he might have been fighting the wrong monsters the entire time.

Engaging and entertaining
Thoroughly enjoyed this easy listen. A book you don't have to think about, just enjoy the story.
8 books for 1 credit is also a bonus.

a really roller coaster of emotions.
an extremely entertaining listen.
I found myself really getting behind the characters, and getting a lump in my throat at times.

old ground
plot twist, imagine a world where humans the real enemy not the zombies...
Sometimes you forget there are any zombies at all. It seems to be heavy influenced by computer games like Days Gone and even Fallout plus TV shows like The Walking Dead. Might be good if you are new to zombie stories but really nothing new to grizzled veteran.

This zombie story appears to have forgotten zombies for the last 2 books.
This book has been a major struggle to continue and the only reason I have done so is because I have already invested so much time. Characters do not feel authentic in the way they act, often making ridiculous actions or comments. The bizarre ‘hero worship’ that people have regarding John feels awkward. Then to have Peter going from a pretty rubbish husband to narcissistic, alcoholic, womaniser a few books later just felt forced. I will finish the omnibus, but I can’t see myself ever continuing this story with the new books. The writing style matched the over all disappointment of this book, with every sentence starting with “John said”, “John looked”, “John did”. The narrator did a good job with what he had been given, but honestly, if you’re looking for a good zombie story look elsewhere.

Didn’t bother finishing it!
I rarely leave reviews and love zombie fiction but this was a drag . Flat characters and dull vocabulary . Narrator tried but the general tone was as if reading to child.

Hard work
From what sounded like a interesting audio sample it just became a grind getting through , I wasn't able to finish, some brilliant authors on end of civilisation stories but having listernd to 24 hours it wasn't possible to feel any empathy with the characters, with such illogical decisions repeatedly made, then questioning why by the characters themselves, then repeating it's tough to believe they would have survived a week in any situation, the longer it went on the less believable it became, the phrase " that's all that matters" used over and over then clearly. It wasn't all that matters as the actions that got them there were nonsensical. The author put lots of work into the story but it felt like the target was the length not the content. I don't know the end and don't care, John South was a bit of a prat.

Terrible
I very rarely leave a negative review. If something is bearable I don't comment but my God this is one of the hardest books I've listened too.
Best of luck to the author in his future endeavours but writing is not for you.
