'A real-life page turner more intriguing than anything on Netflix..' Matt Nixson, Mail on Sunday
'[A story] almost too mad to make up, too good not to tell.' Ben Dirs, BBC World News
In July 1978, two bodies were discovered in the sea off Guatemala. They were found to be the remains of Chris Farmer and his girlfriend Peta Frampton, two young British graduates. Having been beaten and tortured, then thrown, still alive, into the sea, their bodies had been weighted down and dumped from the yacht on which they had been crewing. For nearly forty years, no one was charged with these brutal murders.
This is the shocking and compelling story of how Chris's sister, Penny, and her family tracked down his and Peta's killer. For decades they painstakingly gathered evidence against Silas Boston, the yacht's American owner, working alongside police in the UK and the USA, as well as the FBI, until he was finally arrested and charged with two counts of murder in 2016. Astonishingly, Penny was able to track down Boston's son, whose bravery in testifying against his own father was the key to bringing down Chris and Peta's killer after so many years.
Dead In The Water is the story of a murder almost unimaginable in its cruelty and one ordinary woman's unwavering determination to find justice for her brother.
Chosen by O, The Oprah magazine, as one of its top twenty best true crime books of all time.
'[A] moving debut... This engrossing, heartbreaking story is sure to appeal to true-crime fans'. Publishers Weekly

Dead In the Water
I read this book after discovering the Penny Farmer was going to be doing a talk on it at CrimeCon ‘24. Having no knowledge of the case I was very interested to find out more. I cannot recommend it enough, a truly fascinating case with many twists & turns although extremely heart breaking to hear the details of what happened to her brother & partner.

Hard slog to finish
A very sad story. Unfortunately badly read by the narrator, and drawn out by the author.

Paradise podcast is better
I found out about this book via the podcast, Paradise, about the same case. This book seemed to repeat itself a lot, reminded me a bit of a GCSE essay.
Interesting case though.

excellent
the narration is fine, and an American reader is employed for the American speakers featured in the text.

Spun out for too long at the end
The story is fine but the prose is not very good. If you are going to use a northern accent for the narration please don't make such a mess of the American accents. Pick a person who can do a northern accent AND other accents. So, a low mark for the narration.

Unthinkable
I enjoyed the narration.
A harrowing story courageously written by Penny Farmer. You and your Mum are very brave.

Sad but fascinating real life story
I couldn’t put this down it was a fascinating and educational story. I’ve learned a lot from listening to this book and my heart goes out to all involved. As a mother myself I felt the pain of Mrs Farmer. So sad for Chris and Petr what happened to them was unbelievable. My heart also goes out to the boys who were so brave to put up with such an evil life. I do hope all the families can move on in life . Thank you for sharing your horrendous story .

Eye opening
I want to say this is a great book but considering the tragic event that almost seems disrespectful. It has really opened my eyes to the red tape that the police have to deal with and also the complete disconnect with different jurisdictions. The tenacity of a grieving family has amazed me.

Worth a listen
Well written story and for the most part very good narration, though the American accent at the very end which only took up a tiny amount of the book was horrific. Though to be honest the majority of the book is wonderfully read.

Listened to Paradise then listened to the book.
I thought the book would be less interesting because I new the back story. I was wrong!! Apart from the terrible way in which the author's brother and his girlfriend died, it was an extremely compelling book. The number of bungles by police and then the series of extraordinary coincidences to finally, nearly get justice. A consolation is that Boston would have really suffered with his choice of death.
