About this listen

A stunning thriller set in wartime Berlin from the author of Blackout.

Berlin. January 1941.

Evil cannot bring about good...

After Germany's invasion of Poland, the world is holding its breath and hoping for peace. At home, the Nazi Party's hold on power is absolute.

One freezing night, an SS doctor and his wife return from an evening mingling with their fellow Nazis at the concert hall. By the time the sun rises, the doctor will be lying lifeless in a pool of blood.

Was it murder or suicide? Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke is told that under no circumstances should he investigate. The doctor's widow, however, is convinced her husband was the target of a hit. But why would anyone murder an apparently obscure doctor? Compelled to dig deeper, Schenke learns of the mysterious death of a child. The cases seem unconnected, but soon chilling links begin to emerge that point to a terrifying secret.

Even in times of war, under a ruthless regime, there are places in hell no man should ever enter. And Schenke fears he may not return alive...

I’m invested now

Really enjoying a WWII series set in Germany. I find the insights fascinating and I’m now thoroughly invested in the protagonists. Looking forward to the next one.

The story

Probably the best book I have ever read. A well constructed story which maintained my interest throughout.

Great storytelling

This is the second book in the series I read after being a Scarrow fan for years I moved from Ancient Rome, Cato and Macro, to just pre war Germany. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it but was surprised how much I did!! Not sure Liebewitch’s Welsh accent in book two was necessary but got used to it. Awaiting the next instalment!!

Absorbing listen

Loving this series. Well written with interesting plots, twists and turns. Written against the backdrop of Berlin at war, with terrible historic truths woven into the story. making for an intriguing and suspenseful listen. Hoping there will be another book in this series!!

Story line is credible ruined by the bizarre choice of accents the narrator uses

Interesting story line set in WW2 Germany however the narrator ruined this for me with his odd choice of accents for different characters, particularly the Northern U.K. accent for Kleist. Why do this? They’re German. Just use a normal voice, it doesn’t add anything to the narration.

I like the narrator

Second part of the series - not bad.
The relationship aspect with Karin is irritating and I do t like how she is depicted.
I look forward however to next in series and hope the women’s characters are shaped better.

Inspector Schenker is growing on me

The previous book, Blackout, introduced us to the world of policing in early wartime Berlin. Unlike most democracies where the police get on with their jobs without political intervention the Nazi state had tentacles in every aspect of life. Our hero has to tread a fine line not to upset the NSDAP, the SS etc. The truly evil Reinhard Heydrich, with his threatening presence, appears again to menace Schenker and his team trying to solve what was originally thought to be a simple case of murder. Plus we have a ration coupons storyline means that the book moves along at a good pace. There is also time for Schenker to have a personal life that has a number of twists.
Enjoyed it very much, the main police characters Schenker, sergeant Hauser and their recruit from the SS have been fleshed out nicely. Look forward to book 3

Dead of Night

A great follow-up to Blackout. Immersive. Brilliantly horrifying storyline so will wait to see how Simon Scarrows Berlin WWII interpretation of WWII events Criminal Polizei series continues. Excellent narration.

Gripping from Start to Finish

Seriously did not want this to end, incredibly well researched and written with outstanding narration. The personal experience of each main character really enhances the harrowing crimes being uncovered in the foreground. I listened to both books 1 & 2 straight after each other so getting to know the gestapo officer as he transferred to the lower rank of crime investigator was really interesting because I found myself liking him. It’s the first time in any of the many many WW2 historical fiction books I’ve read that a member of the SS or gestapo felt like this one has. Excited to hear more, will there be a part 3? Keeping everything crossed for it not to be too long a wait. Five stars from me.
