Summary

As he drove his chief down to Kidlington, Lewis returned the conversation to where it had begun.

'You haven't told me what you think about this fellow Owens - the dead woman's next-door neighbour.'

'Death is always the next-door neighbour,' said Morse sombrely.

The murder of a young woman... A cryptic 17th-century love poem... And a photograph of a mystery grey-haired man...

More than enough to set Chief Inspector E. Morse on the trail of a killer.

And it's a trail that leads him to Lonsdale College, where the contest between Julian Storrs and Dr Denis Cornford for the coveted position of Master is hotting up.

But then Morse faces a greater, far more personal crisis....

Fabulous addition to the series

A wonderful twisty turny story. Its very melancholic in parts but the banter between Morse and Lewis is exemplary. All signs lead to the final path for Morse so its particularly poignant that he finds a good woman to have a last fling with. Once again Sam West is brillant . Highly recommended.

Another Morse and Lewis mystery

I love the way Morse paints a picture before he has got the facts and then the hard working Lewis goes on to provide the facts needed to solve the case. Most of these 'Who dun nit' books has me guessing for quite a while. Sometimes right to the end. The only part I'm not keen about is the rambling for what seems like forever at the beginning

A classic Morse novel beautifully read by Mr. West

All of the Morse novels are fabulous examples of Colin Dexter's mastery of the English language and ability to hold a captive audience. This aidiobook is no exception. The plot is excellent and the story is broken down into very managable chapters. Samuel West's wonderful narration brings the audiobook to life. The result? This audiobook comes highly recommended.

Superb

I never like Morse on the TV and shied away from buying these books because of that - I thought Morse a shallow character. But the stories give him more than flesh and blood, and develop the relationship between him and Lewis (almost) to a plutonic love story. The stories are read with sensitivity and panache - I’ve now bought them all!!

Morse

Nothing like the character John Thaw plays but the books are so much better. Loved the series as well though.
