Summary
Sergeant Hamish Macbeth is alarmed to receive a report from a woman in the small village of Cronish in the Scottish Highlands. She has been brutally attacked and the criminal is on the loose. But upon further investigation, Hamish discovers that she was lying about the crime. So when the same woman calls him back about an intruder, he simply marvels at her compulsion to lie.
This time, though, she is telling the truth. Her body is found in her home and Hamish must sort through all of her lies to solve the crime.

Easy listen
A great story for easy listening. The narrator’s voice is expressive and takes the story along. Thoroughly enjoyed this story while decorating!

Excellent
This whole series is excellent. I have enjoyed every story and on reaching the end of the book although sorry the story has come to an end I thoroughly look forward to the next and have not been disappointed. This is partly due to the narrator. I wish David Monteath narrated all books! I have been turned off in the first couple of minutes of a book purely by the narration. It is not an easy job but David Monteath has a gift.

Entertaining
As always a great listen - with familiar figures and a new Murder with its twists and turns, mystery, romance and humour all in one story - enough to keep one’s interest - on a wet windy winter day !!

Murder capital of Europe
By density of population Sutherland's murder & suicide rate surely exceeds that of Midsomer, maybe NY or Chicago! Sad to say, the body count and level of violence seems to be growing, in line with the present fashion for explicit butchery, but it hasn't YET reached the point that I stop listening/reading to the series.
Hamish is getting more crabbit and thrawn. He can be kind and wise, but he's more often abrupt and unsociable. His unwanted live-in constables, remarkably domesticated to a man, find true love, whereas Hamish just can't do relationships of a constant nature.
The antics of the egregious Blair (the other one) would get Holyrood in a right stooshie if at all likely. Unfortunately I've got fond of many of the peripheral folk - the Currie twins, the Brodies, Wellingtons, Mr Patel, Archie, the ex-polis Hamish has driven to catering, etc, so unless the abattoir factor gets too much, or a new narrator is employed, I'll have to keep on listening.

Funniest ending ever
Improbable plot but who cares.....that’s why it’s called fiction. At the resolution I was laughing out loud. Thank you M C Beaton for giving me the gift of laughter when I really needed it.

A good plot.
Hamish is like Agatha Raisin, he continually targets women that would never suit. He also sets impossible targets, they must be beauties, intelligent and lay down their lives to suit his lifestyle. He is like a "dog with a bone"; with all the women he courts, he turns cruel and nasty if anyone else shows attention. Yet he is not will to commit and feels he has the right to court who he wants. The storylines are good, but Hamish has a truly cruel streak. I suppose with no other eligible male around the women are forced to tolerate his behaviour. Any female stupid woman who marries him, would end up with a NAG for a husband.
