About this listen

Street kid turned undercover cop.

'This time he wasn't getting up. Neither were the two young women he'd just murdered. The two unarmed young police officers he cut down in a hail of 32 bullets and the fragments of a grenade, ending their promising lives so savagely, so senselessly. I felt empty. Cold. How had it come to this?'

Shay grew up on a tough Manchester council estate where drugs and gangs were rife. A life of crime would have been an easy path to take. So it went against everything that was expected of him when he joined the police.

It wouldn't be long before Shay's prodigious talent caught the attention of the top. Then came the call that changed his life: an offer to join the secret Level 1 undercover unit known as Omega. And it was easy to see why they wanted him; he wouldn't have to stray too far from what he already knew. He had all the attributes of a professional criminal - the athletic physique of a cage fighter, the talk, the walk. Streetwise and fearless, he'd be a match for the most hardened villain. He was given a new identity, his DNA and fingerprints were removed from the national database, and so began the life of Mikey O'Brien.

In a distinguished covert career spanning 17 years, former solider Shay infiltrated Moss Side gangs, was part of a hand-picked team hunting Dale Cregan and was brought in to break up a gang war wall of silence after the murder of Salford 'Mr Big' Paul Massey. But there would be a heavy price to pay for a life in the shadows, where any mistake could have lethal consequences...

Critic reviews

A phenomenal story of the life of a Level 1 undercover police officer with the courage to step into the lion's den every day, not knowing if it would be his last. (James Deegan)

A fantastic real story from a proper hero. His story deserves to be told and I hope he one day gets the credit and recognition he deserves.

Listen to this book.

A splendid book. Offering a detailed insight of a covert police officer’s trials and tribulations of doing undercover policing in England.

This book is the reality of the way officers get treated in the UK. It highlights the outstanding work that was done and the lack of support given by the Police.

I was only on the first chapter, before sharing it with a few colleagues and telling them how I thought they’d like it. I was actually gutted I couldn’t keep listening in the car and had to go into work! I didn’t even mind the heavy traffic on the way home, because it meant I could carry on listening.

I loved hearing about Shay’s back story, about his childhood and how he got into the police. I instantly liked him and thought he is such a fascinating character. His stories were so interesting and I was gripped. The way he was treated was shameful, but sadly not unexpected.

I hope Shay can look back on it all and be so proud of everything he did, the world needs more people like him!

I really didn’t want this book to end!!!

The narration was also great, Christopher’s gravelly, Mancunian accent was perfect for telling this story and really brought it all to life.

This is BRILLIANT

Utterly exhilarating and heartbreaking in equal measures. An inspiring story about someone who probably could have been a high end criminal if he’d wanted to but decided to put his amazing mind to better uses. The treatment you received at the hands of GMP is nothing other than disgusting. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to this story and although it was difficult to hear some parts it’s a true insight into police that actually are good people and do have our backs! And the sacrifices they make. 5stars.

Gripping!

My wife and I have both listened to this and we’re gripped by the entire thing.
If you love adrenalin filled action this is definitely for you. It’s a very exciting ride
It’s also a sad story and unbelievably infuriating at times.
I thought the narration was great as the actor sounded like you would imagine the character to sound which makes it feel authentic when listening. In my head, the actors voice is Shay Doyle!
I would absolutely 100% recommend this book.

Incredible and gripping story
