About this listen
Jack Lark journeys to South Africa in the eleventh action-packed Victorian military adventure featuring hero Jack Lark: soldier, leader, imposter.
Historical military fiction at its finest, for fans of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series, Matthew Harffy and Patrick O'Brian.
South Africa, 1871. Jack Lark no longer walks alone. With the worldly Anna Baker by his side, he travels to the Cape Colony diamond fields determined to seek their fortune - and an adventurous new life together.
The journey north soon turns violent as tensions erupt between other hopeful diggers and a gang of Boer men. Everyone has their eye on the same elusive prize - and some will stop at nothing to get it.
For Jack and Anna, unearthing a diamond is only half the battle. Getting out of the mines alive will prove far more difficult - and dangerous. And when the worst happens, Jack finds himself tested as no enemy, no man and no war has ever before.

We are losing Jack
I loved these stories and unashamedly became a fan of Jack. However we seem to be slowly loosing the fighter and rogue that make Jack the character we love. I believe that the world we now live in is making Mr Collard a little woke with admitting and accepting how the wold was. It was brutal , empires were brutal, the people in those empires were brutal and patriotically proud. It took the last few chapters before the Jack became Jack.

edit
I keep telling myself to stop following this series, but I don't, I want to know what happens to Lark next and that is my downfall.
The narrator can do Lark, and a posh officer voice; stray from those and it goes wrong - here, he makes the Dutch sound like nazis out of a b grade film. In fairness to mimic Dutch speaking English is not easy. As always the book needs a good edit, a fault that runs through the series, a chapter or two too long and too much repetition: I know Lark is in pain and don't need telling every other sentence. other than that...

Another good storey line
Jack does not half get into some mess, and the end was surprising awaiting his next adventure

Disappointing
I have read all the previous books in this series and have always enjoyed them. However this one was excruciating to listen to. There was more padding than a well-stuffed mattress. The storyline was good but totally spoiled by over-description of everything and every emotion. The hero was at death’s door on so many occasions but kept bouncing back beyond any credibility. The reincarnation of his companion was unbelievable.
