About this listen
If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!
Under the Eagle is the gripping first novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. A must-read for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.
AD 42, Germany. Tough, brutal and unforgiving. That's how new recruit Cato is finding life in the Roman Second Legion. He may have contacts in high places, but he could really use a friend amongst his fellow soldiers right now. Cato has been promoted above his comrades at the order of the Emperor and is deeply resented by the other men. But he quickly earns the respect of his Centurion, Macro, a battle-hardened veteran as rough and ready as Cato is quick-witted and well-educated. They are poles apart, but soon realise they have a lot to learn from one another.
On a campaign to Britannia - a land of utter barbarity - an enduring friendship begins. But as they undertake a special mission to thwart a conspiracy against the Emperor they rapidly find themselves in a desperate fight to survive....

First rate!
The narrator is brilliant. This is a great book anyway and the narrator brings it to life. The characters are easy to follow and the author has done a great job in placing you there with them.
Highly recommend.

A good entertaining listen
As with a lot of audio books you wonder "How can I listen to this voice for that many hours?" but typically after the first chapter you ease into the dulcet tones of the narrator as I did with this book. Well narrated and easy to discern characters from the nuanced alterations of accents and pronunciation...although his vocal portrayal of women leaves something to be desired. This is an entertaining journey into the intrigue and life of a Roman soldier, I look forward to listening to more of this series.

Excellent
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, fun with likeable characters, historical, at least in the sense of not destroying history, it fills in the gaps.

A great listen
Another great story and build up. The narration is difficult to get into at first but then does suit the story the longer you stay with it

Where does Under the Eagle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

With a letter of commendation from the Emperor who recommends he is made a centurion. This does not happen but, he is appointed a rank above more experienced soldiers. As second-in-command to Macro, an centurion who leads them, Cato will have more to prove than most in the adventures that lie ahead. After fighting the Hun . Good book, average narration.
Any additional comments?
Really enjoyed the book and shall be reading more. Only let down by the narration. Seemed to me to be reading it as though it were a childrens novel!! and some of the accents were almost comical. The Ben Kane Spartacus books are so much better read (by Michael Praed)....far grittier.
