Summary

The remoter parts of the English Fens are forlorn, lost and damp even in the height of summer. At Lyot Lock, a large decaying house, two young cousins, Leonora and Edward are parked for the summer with their ageing spinster aunt and her cruel housekeeper. At first the unpleasantness and petty meanness’s appear simply spiteful, calculated to destroy Edward's equanimity. But when spoilt Leonora is not given the birthday present of a specific dolly that she wants, affairs inexorably take a much darker turn with terrifying, life-destroying, consequences for everyone.

Excellent gothic ghost story.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this ghost story, with a very gothic feel. Set in the fens, it has a wonderful atmosphere, is well read and was just the right length to listen to in one longish car journey.

Interesting

The story itself is simple and straightforward but fascinating and thought-provoking. Susan Hill paints some vivid, atmospheric descriptions, and listening, I really felt I was there in that big old brooding house. The narrator, Cameron Stewart, was excellent. I definitely want to hear more from him.

I expected a ghost story to rival Woman in Black

I expected a ghost story to rival Woman in Black but not much happened!
The narrator has a very soothing voice, though!

Not for me

Short, strange and I lost interest in the last third of the book…the female voices weren’t v weirdly done.

Perfect Ghost Story

I really loved this. Perfect ghost story comes back and forth in time, and although felt sad for the character, liked the ending. Would love to read more about this dolls and their origin..

Beautifully written and atmospheric

Another beautifully written supernatural story from one of the greats. Susan Hill takes a fireside tale and adds layer upon layer to the mundane, racking up tension without the reader realising (at least in my case) when the main character was confronted with Leonora’s daughter, for a moment I was breathless.
Atmosoheric and vivid - it’s up there with Small Hand and Mist in the Mirror (a rung below her magnum opus, The Woman in Black).
