Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • With unparalleled reporting, a Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times reporter chronicles the clash between a president and the officials of his own government who tried to stop him.

“A meticulously reported volume that clearly benefits from the author’s extraordinary access . . . [a] startling dissection of the Trump presidency.”—The New York Times

Donald Trump v. The United States tells the dramatic, high-stakes story of those who felt compelled to confront and try to contain the most powerful man in the world as he shredded norms and sought to expand his power. Michael S. Schmidt takes listeners inside the defining events of the presidency, chronicles them up close, and records the clash between an increasingly emboldened president and those around him, who find themselves trying to thwart the president they had pledged to serve, unsure whether he is acting in the interest of the country, his ego, his family business, or Russia. Through their eyes and ears, we observe an epic struggle.

Drawing on secret FBI and White House documents and confidential sources inside federal law enforcement and the West Wing, Donald Trump v. The United States is vital journalism from a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter that records the shocking reality of a presidency like no other. It is a riveting contemporary history and a lasting account of just how fragile and vulnerable the institutions of American democracy really are.

Critic reviews

“[Michael S.] Schmidt chronicles how the professionals around the president tried to bring order to the White House and to keep Trump within the bounds of the law.... A powerful accounting of ... lawlessness and chaos.” (The Washington Post)

Excellent research brought to life but narration was tough going

Dense with detail and informative.
A fine body of work and the author well deserves our admiration.

Performance was not so great for me. I found the narration too fast and monotonous. I struggled to stay focused on the content.

It is a long audio book but I could’ve done with one of the many excellent audible voices to
narrate.

Requiem For A Cult Leader

Brilliant book about 45s bizarre stint as President. Covers all the major impeachment stuff and other horrendous and outrageous incidents that NUMBED the world. Written expertly by a well respected and impartial journalist, and definitely one of the better 'Dump' books.

wake up America and GB

Great book, very informative and very concerning. A must read for those who care about the world and the future for your children and their children. Wake up America and GB, at least be aware of what is happening and where it leads. If the future looks good under these circumstances, laid out in this book, then it is already too late. If you are worried about where we are and what the future holds under current circumstances then it's time to vote for a better outcome.

Why ruin a good story by....

... getting an untrained person to read the text?
It's hard work, reading aloud. And if you aren't trained, it's too much to ask. The author tries hard, but.

Multiple glottal stops in one word, misplaced emphasis in almost every sentence. It's really distracting.
But the story is well written, interesting narrative arc. I did get used to it after a couple of hours. But I would pay more for a well trained reader to read the excellent text.

Why is it so common to suppose that reading aloud is easy? It really isn't. I love the sound of the American voice. That makes it all the harder to listen to a story mangled to death.

I've followed this administration closely over the last (almost) four years. Therefore much of the content of this book was already familiar to me, but Schmidt does a great job of focussing on some of the most significant events and characters of this presidency so far and weaving a coherent narrative from the chaos.

If you have been following the reporting over the last four years then having further insight into some of the behind the scenes decisions made by the Times is truly fascinating, plus there are a few explosive but previously unreported stories included here.

The book illustrates over and over again the realisation of just how unfit for office Trump is by some of his closest allies.

It is well written, pithy and serves as a useful reminder ahead of the upcoming election season. Recommended.

Well laid out

The book gave a great insight into what was in the news outlets regarding all the investigations.

Fascinating

A good book but struggled to stay with it because of the narrator's flat voice.
