NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"The most comprehensive and detailed account of the Trump presidency yet published."—The Washington Post

A Best Book of the Year: The New Yorker and Financial Times

"The book everyone is talking about."—Politico

The inside story of the four years when Donald Trump went to war with Washington, from the chaotic beginning to the violent finale, told by revered journalists Peter Baker of
The New York Times and Susan Glasser of The New Yorker—an ambitious and lasting history of the full Trump presidency that also contains dozens of exclusive scoops and stories from behind the scenes in the White House, from the absurd to the deadly serious.

"A sumptuous feast of astonishing tales...The more one reads, the more one wishes to read."—NPR.com
"A beautifully written, utterly dispiriting history of the man who attacked democracy." —The Guardian

The bestselling authors of The Man Who Ran Washington argue that Trump was not just lurching from one controversy to another; he was learning to be more like the foreign autocrats he admired.

The Divider brings us into the Oval Office for countless scenes both tense and comical, revealing how close we got to nuclear war with North Korea, which cabinet members had a resignation pact, whether Trump asked Japan’s prime minister to nominate him for a Nobel Prize and much more. The book also explores the moral choices confronting those around Trump—how they justified working for a man they considered unfit for office, and where they drew their lines.

The Divider is based on unprecedented access to key players, from President Trump himself to cabinet officers, military generals, close advisers, Trump family members, congressional leaders, foreign officials and others, some of whom have never told their story until now.

Critic reviews

"Well-paced and engagingly written...the most comprehensive and detailed account of the Trump presidency yet published."The Washington Post

"[A] detail-rich history of the Trump administration...Comprehensively researched and briskly told...Squeezing the tumultuous events of the long national fever dream that was the Donald Trump presidency between two covers...would tax the skills of the nimblest journalist. Yet the husband-and-wife team of Baker and Glasser pull it off with assurance."—The New York Times Book Review

"As a sumptuous feast of astonishing tales, it may hold wonderments indeed for those first contemplating the enormity of the Trump phenomenon...But even a reader steeped in years of Trump coverage and well-versed in the precedent literature may be surprised at how compelling this narrative proves to be. The more one reads, the more one wishes to read."NPR.com

outstanding

I have read quite a few books on Trump and this is by far the best. Gripping, infuriating account of his four years of borderline insanity.

Historically important

When future generations want to know what the lunatic President Trump was like this will be one of the resource materials to study. Gobsmackingly brilliant.

Enlightening and shocking

Very informative and frightening how close the US and the world came to the brink with a vindictive, childish, narcassist in a position of great power. Hopefully the future finds Trump in jail.

Gripping first take of History

The late editor of the Washington Post Ben Bradley used to say 'journalism is the first take of history' and this audiobook falls into that category. Written by husband and wife team Peter Baker and Susan Glasser, who also wrote a wonderful book on James A. Baker III, this is the first work which covers the entirety of the Trump Presidency rather than the 2020 election or specific aspects i.e russian connections.

I will admit to being unsure when purchasing this audiobook if I could endure a recounting of such a recently ended presidency and one which may yet have a sequel. But I really enjoyed the authors book on James Baker so I decided to try and was amazed by the sheer amount I had forgotten had occured, and was stunned by the level of chaos behind the scenes. This is not a screed which ignores the things Trump accomplished such as remaking the judiciary and supreme court along with tax cuts. But it is the almost cartoonish level of backbiting and scheming alongside Trump and his seemingly constant eruptions of anger at his staff which dominates this audiobook.

The narration is very well done and does not resort to cliche of Trump impressions, it is a serious work and has clearly benifited from access to many of the main members of the Trump administration including interviews with the former president himself, As a chronicle of one of the most unique and eventful presidential administrations ever this is a very good way to start.

More journalism than history.

A good book, with a lot of detail and presented in a readily digestible way. Lacking perhaps in deeper commentary and discussion on the modus operandi of the regime and the character of trump. Not so much a history as a very long newspaper article. I thoroughly enjoyed it in spite of this fact.

Terrifying compendium

Although much of the startling reportage has appeared previously in various forms, this is a horrifying reminder of what that country endured, and may again

Great so far

Only two chapters in but alarmed by their continual assertion that Trump was and is a billionaire. Surely by time of press they were aware of his highly inflated wealth. I would expect better from the tr wp best placed writers.

A timeline of incompetence

As a timeline of the 4 years Trump with as in office, it’s horrible to look back on that the man was incapable of doing the most basic things. While it recaps the events well and the documented accounts from former aids and personnel are interesting, it needed more juice for me. Nevertheless, it’s an ideal reading companion to know where America headed and what it might take in the future.
