About this listen
One February evening in northern England, a young woman is shot in the head and left in a coma. Eight months later she dies, thus becoming a welcome excuse to dispatch the odious Inspector Dover as far as possible from London. It soon appears that Isobel Slatcher could have been smothered in her hospital bed with a pillow. Now Dover may have two murderers to catch: one who pulled the trigger, the other the last visitor she had in her short lifetime. If, that is, the town’s warring Catholics and Protestants will only stop distracting him.

“Meet Detective Chief Inspector Wilfred Dover. He’s fat, lazy, a scrounger and the worst detective at Scotland Yard. But you will love him.” (Manchester Evening News)

I want more!
There are only two books recorded so far. I really hope the rest are recorded, because I will not hesitate to buy them.
The narrator is very good and managed the different voices very well. He got Dover off to a tee.
The story is well written, funny, and never flags, with a rich variety of characters, the foremost being Dover and his long suffering detective sergeant trainee.
I didn't work out the plot before the reveal, and maybe you won't either!

Good second episode
As the second book in the series, this was a good read and thoroughly enjoyable. The characters have developed in a natural way and its funny to see how Dover can talk his way into and out of anything without any negative impact on himself. The narrator is excellent and each character is clearly identifiable. The stories are clever and many clues are given along the way and I like how the relationship between the two detectives is used to explain the story. What i like about these books is that you get the crime and the detection without gore or psychological nonsense that so many authors seem to lean towards. I will definitely be listening to the next in the series.

DOVER and out
Dover is an unlikeable narcissistic bully who revels in being seen as the case solver. His Detective Sgt is long suffering and the characters are nasty and the cases predictable - but it doesn’t matter as it is beautifully read and a delight to listen too and not a computer, mobile phone or social media blogger in sight. Loved it
