Summary
On the eve of war, can she and her family pull through?
The Adams family were poor, cheerful and, above all, respectable.
There was Mrs Adams, a widow having lost her husband in the Boer War; Boots, the bright one; Tommy, the quiet one; Sammy, a wheeler dealer in the making; and Lizzy. Lizzy was a real pearl - one of the prettiest girls in Walworth.
Then Lizzy falls in love it is 1914. War is coming, and everyone is going to be affected. Will the Adams family - gutsy, tough and cheeky - pull through?
Down Lambeth Way is the first in Mary Jane Staples' Adams Family series. Their story continues in Our Emily.

Nice Change
Not my usual choice of genre but thoroughly enjoyable, especially as the story is set where I was born and grew up, although not when!

Loved it
Started reading this book as it was free to audible members. I soon got engrossed in the storyline and the lives of the characters. I loved the witty comments made through the story some of which had myself laughing out loud. Yet the book was also serious and I personal felt I was there during the 1st world war battles. Overall the book has converted me into a fan of the series and I will be starting book 2 today.

What a find
Being born in Bermondsey SE London in the 1950’s this book brought back so happy memories of my early years there. It was a wonderful book full of ups and downs but lots of laugh out loud moments too. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next book in this Saga!

Good family Saga
Just love this family… and Annie Aldington is a brilliant narrator. With added mystery and a twist at the end it kept me interested… My only negative would be the number of times the author used the word “bosom” it made me laugh though.
Looking forward to the next installment about Emily.. (the families neighbour)

What a treat!
I was looking for a story that didn't have drugs, sex, unpleasant relationships & generally a real downer. I found it in this first of a series from Mary Jane Staples. Looking forward to the next one in the series & onwards. A real pleasure.

Wonderfully written war time story
I really enjoyed this wonderfully written war time saga.
It’s written from a man’s point of view and the narrator reads it to perfection; bringing the characters to life and captivating her audience.
I absolutely loved this book written with humour and a warmth that leaves you wanting more.

A book I would normally leave on the shelf
I picked this audio book as a freebie in Plus catalogue, even tho way off genre of my usual fare. I was so underwhelmed by the offerings and desperate for something to listen to I hit this and added to my library. When I could find nothing that tempted me in my library, I clicked on this. Never have I laughed, loved, lived and breathed a book so quickly and easily. I'm in love with little Sammy, his quips and wheeler dealing had me in stitches, in fact I burst out laughing at one quick retort that my DH jumped up panicking. It's a brilliant book, not sentimental nor wishy washy, just a fascinating account of 1900's East End hard-working decent people. Poor and forever at the pawnshop but grafters and so so proud. If a cynic like me can listen and enjoy then what are you waiting for?
