About this listen
Dragonfly Falling is the second book in the critically acclaimed epic fantasy series Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Children of Time.
Every hero must be tested....
The Wasp Empire’s armies are on the move – and the city of Tark will be first to feel their might. Salma and Totho prepare for battle, alongside their Ant-kinden brethren. And within Tark’s walls, they’ll face a force greater than any Lowlander has ever seen. Stenwold Maker predicted this threat, and the Empire's secret service now deems him too dangerous to live. So he’s to be eliminated, and his beloved city of Collegium destroyed. For if this centre of learning is lost, it will crush Lowland resistance.
As the Empire's troops continue their relentless advance, their young Emperor pursues another, even darker goal. And his success would trigger a reign of blood lasting a thousand years.
Dragonfly Falling is followed by the third book in the Shadows of the Apt series, Blood of the Mantis.

Ups the ante from the original
I read the first one which was pretty good but I feel like the second is much better thanks to a greater sense of scale both in the sense of the wasp invasion but also thanks to the book sowing us more of the other insect kinden and their intriguing societies. Excellently narrated, by the way.

Different to the first but just as enjoyable
Really enjoyed this, there were quite a few battles but it was nicely broken up with seeing both sides and moving to other POV characters. Looking forward to more of this!

Cluttered with characters...but good.
At this point I feel like there are just way to many characters. The cast from the first book are splitting up more and shaping up into new groups of their own. You don't really have a main character, you just jump between the different groups of the main cast. So it gets cluttered, and the whole suffers.
The book just don't have enough time to keep up with them all, so quite often you get summaries of what happened or of what someone did instead of following along as it unfolds. So you feel like it's told at you, instead of you following along.
For some, this might be a positive. As it keeps the momentum going at a fairly fast pace..but I felt the lack of breathing room and time to connect with the characters.
I would still recommend it for fans of the first. There are more issues with this book, but the exploration of the world, it's history and society is still very fun. So overall I enjoyed it, and will probably read the next at some point.

really solid fantasy
this is not perhaps as good as the first one but it is a great and engaging read - involving us in more of the great and imaginative setting and Kinden's. In my view the only things that let it down where some very weak love interests that I wont spoil. overall though this is a very good book and well worth reading.

Brilliant
I loved this book! I already can't wait for the next one, and just really enjoy the characters, the stories and the idea of their arts.
