Summary

Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help. While working on a biography of the late poet Lydia Brooke, she has uncovered information that has her convinced Lydia's suicide five years ago was really murder. As Duncan begins his investigation, another murder occurs closer to home. Now he finds himself frantically searching for clues in Lydia's complicated past to find the killer before he strikes again. Award-winning author Deborah Crombie has crafted a beautifully written, multilayered mystery that leaves you gasping with surprise. Jenny Sterlin's narration deftly creates an air of suspense while capturing every nuance of the language.

Good story

Strange to listen to such an ‘English’ sounding book written by an American author. There are a few Americanisms - ‘bureau’ instead of ‘chest of drawers’ and ‘break room’ for‘staff room’, but an engaging listen. I’ll definitely listen to the next in the series - or may start from the beginning. Also an enjoyable narration.

A whodunnit with an academic twist

Thoroughly enjoyable.
A likeable detective with an interesting link to the past.
I'd like to find out more about the characters and will definitely read this author again.

Good book, spoiled by narrator

Book is well written, characters well drawn, spoiled by narrator who sounds like Mariella frostrup on tranquillisers, and who frequently misplaces emphases. At least her slow speed .leaves the listener time to work out the meaning before she moves onto the next sentence. Will avoid this narrator in future.

Great book - awful reader

This was another excellent early story in this series. However the reader was awful. Slightly nasal and rather strangled vowels. Gemma sounded like Jamma. It has put me off any more by this reader.

Narration - no thank you

Story sounded interesting. I tried, really tried but the narration went from strident to garbled and some pronunciations were very strange. I started to feel really annoyed as I had to concentrate trying to decipher the narration that I lost where the story was heading. Not for me and so I gave up listening.
