It's 3 a.m. and Elizabeth Gilbert is sobbing on the bathroom floor. She's in her thirties, she has a husband, a house, they're trying for a baby – and she doesn't want any of it.

A bitter divorce and a turbulent love affair later, she emerges battered and bewildered and realises it is time to pursue her own journey in search of three things she has been missing: pleasure, devotion and balance. So she travels to Rome, where she learns Italian from handsome, brown-eyed identical twins and gains twenty-five pounds, an ashram in India, where she finds that enlightenment entails getting up in the middle of the night to scrub the temple floor, and Bali where a toothless medicine man of indeterminate age offers her a new path to peace: simply sit still and smile. And slowly happiness begins to creep up on her.

Amazing Amazing Amazing

Love this so much but would recommend you listen to another version as this has lots of glitches and keeps saying End of Disk One, End of Disk Two etc

Good Story - Bad Recording

I don't feel I need to add to other comments regarding the story and the reading etc, as all is said by others.

But I wonder if I am the only one who has this audiobook as a copy of old CDs? Not only is it irritating to hear 'end of disk 1' etc from the automated voice, but there are scratches on the CDs and the recording skips and crackles and sections are repeated. This is more than one occurrence, and it's particularly bad in the middle of the poem... I had expected more from Audible.

Happy

Third time listening to Liz’ story, travelling through the three I’s. It catches me every time. Written so witty and vulnerable.
So….. still waiting for tBIG magic on Audible. I can read/listen it in Dutch in the local library. Love to here the original though..

Reluctantly enjoyed!

But marred by a very poor audio - which was disappointing! I was a reluctant ‘reader’ but found it engaging, and occasionally funny!

Beautiful

This book is a spiritual odyssey. It's my first time re-reading it in 10 years and I hope I'll read it again 10 years from now. wonderful, funny, poignant and moving.

it's a shame about the sound cutting out now and then. it sounds kind of like a scratched CD, but it only happens about 5 or 6 times over the course of the book.

Makes you think

Beautiful story with a woman with realistic issues to deal with. Atypically she walks out on her broken life to get back basics and in the process she and we the listeners learn some spiritual truths. I cannot imagine myself in an ashram, but the first six years of my life were spent in a convent. I came to see that it’s possible even probable that some universal truths are just that. If we can forget that they may manifest in different ways they may be saying similar things. I loved this book which came to me at a time of change. I recommend it, it’s an easy accessible way to approach impossibly difficult issues and understand some basic truths.

Try the film

The book is good, read well, but it skips repeatedly due to originally being recorded on CD.
I can’t help but dislike the author/narrator also due to being so sanctimonious, all while saying disgustingly offensive words like ‘spaz’.
Therefore I’d say try the film (which I NEVER say when it comes to books) as Julia Roberts makes the author likeable and it’s skips a lot of the unnecessary holier-than-thou parts in the ‘Pray’ section.

This book is so good for the soul. It’s narrated brilliantly by Elizabeth Gilbert. I felt my self smiling and crying throughout. Highly recommend 👍
