About this listen

'Multi-layered and immersive ... Hughes casts the seeds of mystery and doubt like a pro' Irish Independent

'Compelling, unsettling and very creepy' Catherine Kirwan

'Atmospheric and filled with twists and turns ... a fantastic read' Patricia Gibney

Everyone is talking about the disappearance of Emma Harte.

A high-achieving university graduate and young entrepreneur, she was last seen in the early hours of the morning on grainy CCTV footage in Dublin's city centre before vanishing into thin air. While a national debate about women's safety rages, eyes turn to Emma's boyfriend, Tom - who is nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, archivist James Lyster is following the story with undue interest. When a comment he makes about Emma goes viral on social media, he finds himself drawn into the world of a group of idealistic university students involved in the search - and attracting the attention of the police detective in charge of Emma's case.

Then a body is discovered in scrubland near James' flat ...

As the police get closer to finding out what happened to Emma Harte, James' life begins to unravel. Is he a victim or murderer? Feminist ally or callous liar?

For it turns out that James isn't the only one with secrets ...©2024 Andrew Hughes (P)2024 Hodder & Stoughton Limited

really great story, the structure and the narration. the tone and pace used by Gleeson captured the main character perfectly.

excellently read

This is the second Andrew Hughes’s book that I listened too and I loved every minute of it. The writer has a real talent for creating very atmospheric descriptions of the city, landscape, weather, people, etc. It feels like you are really there and the characters are becoming people you know and you don’t want the book to end so those characters can stay with you. I felt the exact same thing when listening to the Coroner’s Daughter. The Narrator was fantastic as well. Really brought the story to a new dimension.

Fantastic

Firstly I loved the narrator's voice. it was perfect for the story. I loved the plot and twists until the end. I'll be looking for more from this author.

Brilliant story about 'ordinary' people.

Beautifully read- I loved the plot - the pace -the unassuming character- yet always that feeling that something is not quite right with this person. I enjoyed his calm forensic analysis of his every move and thought process. How his nonchalant inner voice narrates his outlook. The shift in tone when he expresses an outward calm response - it’s all no bother - I’m a good guy. I was hooked on his unique perception of his world- his believe in his mind reading ability - his belief that he is one step ahead of everything and everyone- until he meets his match- an insight into the inner world of a very troubled person.

Beautiful narrated. Loved this book.
