About this listen

Set in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 1990s, Derry Girls is a candid, one-of-a-kind comedy about what it's like to be a teenage girl living amongst conflict.

It's a time of armed police in armoured Land Rovers and British Army check points. But it's also the time of Murder She Wrote, The Cranberries, Salt-N-Pepa, Doc Martens and The X Files. And while The Troubles may hang over her hometown, Erin has troubles of her own, like the fact that the boy she's in love with (actually in LOVE with) doesn't know she exists. Or that her Ma and Aunt Sarah make her include her weirdo cousin Orla in everything she does. Or that head teacher Sister Michael refuses to acknowledge Erin as a literary genius. Not to mention the fact that her second best friend has ALMOST had sex, whereas Erin's never even kissed anyone yet. These are Erin's Troubles.

Described by the Guardian as 'daft, profane and absolutely brilliant', by the New Statesman as 'pitch-perfect' and by i-D as 'the greatest show on British (and Irish) TV', Derry Girls has dazzled audiences, with Channel 4's biggest UK comedy launch since 2004 and the biggest television series in Northern Ireland since modern records began.

Now, alongside the third series, comes the first official tie-in. With Erin's inner take on everything that has happened so far, this book will both dive deeper into the events we have seen unfold on the screen and unveil brand new stories. Complete with newspaper clippings, doodles, school reports, handwritten notes, and much much more, Erin's Diary is a must-have for fans.

Critic reviews

"Erin is 16 and wishes she had a boyfriend and a life. Nothing else really happens.... It's boring." (Orla McCool)

A fantastic performance by Saoirse-Monica Jackson. The English and American accents she does are really good as well.
Lisa McGee has written an amazing story in Derry Girls and this really helps in giving background to it.

If you like the show, you'll love this.

The voice of her generation. Listened as a companion piece to the book. Great for anyone who wants to improve their Derry accent and immerse themselves in the nuanced intonation of a literary legend. Erin Quinn... There can only ever be one, though I do think that Erin Di Winter does have a certain ring to it.

Brilliant, funny and heartfelt story. And who better to tell the story than the Erin Quinn actress herself, the talented and very witty Saoirse Monica Jackson. If you love the tv series you will definitely love the book and Audible version.

The reading was just extremely good and well done, if only Erin Quinn was as eloquent as Saoirse-Monica Jackson

5/5 for Saoirse-Monica Jackson

This what Derry Girls could have been if the number of episodes were doubled.
A hilarious look at Erin’s inner world through the pages of her diary. Saoirse - Monica Jackson narrates really well: you can instantly recognise the characters through the shift in her voice: love her impressions of Orla and Granda Joe. A really good listen .

A great listen

If you've seen the show then you don't need this because it adds nothing in any way. The worst aspect was that there was a jump of several months between the end of S1 and the beginning of S2. If there had been content here I would have given it a much better score. Even aside from that, there is no need insight into the characters. It feels extremely lazy. I'll be returning it for a refund.
