About this listen

An EMP hits, the lights go out, the breakdown begins.

When Colby Riker, a former LAPD cop turned skillful bounty hunter is hired to bring in Alicia Scott, an elusive bail-jumper, he figured it was an easy payday - until a catastrophic EMP obliterates the country’s power grid and millions are thrust into chaos.

No electricity, no transportation, no phones, no rules.

As panic grips the City of Angels, Colby soon finds out he isn’t the only one anxious to get Alicia. But in the murky underworld of bail bonds and a grid-down disaster, staying one step ahead isn’t easy. Colby must keep her alive as they embark on a cross-city chase to escape the breakdown.

With no power, do you have what it takes to survive?

Six hundred miles north of LA, his small California hometown’s struggle to survive is just beginning as two feuding families confront each other in the darkness of the Redwoods.

Escape the Breakdown is the first explosive book in the Powerless World saga. From the international best-selling author of All That Remains comes a thrilling, post-apocalyptic EMP thriller series about two families fighting for survival in a world gone dark.

Outstanding!

Escape the Breakdown is a brilliant start to Powerless World, an EMP survival series. The story is well-plotted, cleverly written, fast-paced, and descriptive, with the perfect balance of intensity, action, and suspense. The storyline follows two plotlines, first is our hero Colby Riker, the second, his family, the Rikers. I was thoroughly absorbed in the event and the characters' plight and fight for survival. The premise and the setting were incredible and convincing; it's apparent the Jack Hunt is highly informed. The character development is excellent; they were engaging, authentic with depth, strength, and vulnerabilities. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book and finding what's in store for the survivors.

Miles Meili's narration is spot on. He embodied the characters, adapting various tones, and further engrossing the listener. Escape the Breakdown has it all, a fascinating plot, remarkable characters, and stellar narration. I'm definitely recommending this audiobook.

Crazy world makes for a great adventure

I loved this book. This is the first book by this author I have listened to and it's not my normal type of book ( I prefer cozy mysteries) but the blurb and cover peaked my interest and I fancied a change. Boy did I get it and I loved every minute and hoping there is another book to come. This story is told by multiple characters and is about the lengths they go to to survive (not all of them make it) some doing the right thing and others doing things only for themselves. The story is well written and doesn't hang around, as it jumps from one situation/battle to the next but it is not all fighting and death (although there is a lot) as the characters have a good back story, making the main characters like able. I would have liked to known who or why the EMP was let off (maybe later in the series when the characters aren't just fighting to survive?) But other than that I enjoyed and will be getting the next book.
Colby is a bounty Hunter and is tasked with bringing in Alicia but he is not the only one. The Russians want her too and won't let any body get in there way in the hunt for her. Colby is good at his job and if he was wasn't than his four legged partner Caine has his back. The pair find her first but then things go horrible wrong. An EMP pulse is let off over L.A and with tempers already high over demonstrations things reach boiling point and what was once a simple capture and recover turns deadly. But just who is Alicia? And why does someone want her dead so badly?
I liked the narrator he had a pleasant voice and made the story fly by quickly.

Very Disappointing

On the whole this book was ok up until they got to the mansion and met with the young black 16 year old teenager, then it was met with heavy stereotyping and a racist remark to do with the black boy. Not to mention that the boy's life was depicted as being worthless and was 'too' easily sacrificed to save someone he'd only known for less than a day. In particular the author described the black boy as looking like a 'monkey' which is racist and highly offensive. It marred the whole book for me, I was very offended, disappointed and after reading several of his books previously, it made me see the author in a very different light. This book may be triggering for some people.

I was given a copy of this book for free of my own choosing and have voluntarily left this review.
