About this listen

There are two sides to every story.

But only one is the truth.

A young woman turns up at a police station. She has been kept prisoner in her own home. Abused and tortured, her every move watched, her every thought controlled. Now she's finally escaped.

That's what she says.

But when the police arrive at the address she's given them, her story doesn't seem to add up. Her husband is missing, but his phone and wallet are still in the house.

She says she's the victim, but what if she's not? What if the stories she's telling aren't her stories at all....

There were some good parts to this book and I did listen to the end. Perhaps I am hopelessly naive but it didn't seem very likely that single DS accompanied by a couple of apparently clueless DCs would be in charge of such a complex murder enquiry. I also found the DS wholly unlikeable, completely unprofessional and useless at her job.

The book is far longer than is necessary and like someone else said I found the incessant 'she said' 'he goes' etc. a bit grating.

Good in parts

A really well written book when I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next, though I must say I found the detective sergeant rather irritating. But what absolutely blew my mind was the narration! The range of accents was unbelievable; I really thought it was several people narrating and will certainly make a point of seeking Emma Gregory out in future.

Incredible narration

I was enthralled by this book. The story was good- engaging with great character depth and a storyline that kept me wanting to hear more right to the end. But the thing that made this more than just a good and exciting story was the reader. I’m a longtime fan of audible. I’ve listened to probably hundreds of audiobooks. I thought Emma Gregory’s reading of this book was exceptional. I am still hearing the characters in my head a week later. They were absolutely brought alive! I would often question whilst listening if it was actually the same person when she switched between characters. The quality of the reader of the book makes SUCH a difference and this is an instance when that became so clear. Audible take note - this is the standard!
Great book - brilliant reader! You won’t be disappointed.

EXCEPTIONAL reader!

Wow!
Excellent story, not overly complicated or ridiculously unbelievable. Not too many twists and turns, a little bit of dark humour and characters you can relate to .
And what an absolutely incredible narrator ! What a talent. This is good but made great by this lady.
Never given 5*s before so must be impressed. Enjoy!

Oh my goodness, what a fantastic book! I literally couldn't stop listening to it in the car. Brilliant story line, brilliant characters - just a brilliant book. Highly recommended - and I don't usually write reviews.

I have to say Emma Gregorys’ performance narrating this book is outstanding, the best I’ve heard yet!

Best Narrator

In the end I really enjoyed this book, particularly big Debbie and would have liked to know more about her story.
However, there were some very annoying and obvious (in my amateur opinion) mistakes or admissions in the police work such as not properly checking information. Although they helped keep the story going they seemed unlikely and irritating mistakes.
All in all though, an enjoyable listen and some great characters.

Got better as time went on

I'm writing this review before I've finished this book! I'm about 90% through and feel I am sat balanced at the top of a roller coaster about to plummet furiously to a thrilling conclusion before slowly catching my breath. This is one of the best stories I've listened to this year. I am utterly engrossed and am still not sure how any of it is going to end. I have several ideas but the story constantly veers me from one to another and I cannot settle my mind.

The characters are completely engaging, the story line intriguing and the narration really good. One or two of her voices grate on my nerves a little but I think that is more about my preference rather than any lack of narration or accent talent. I've already bought Deborah's other book and feel that she is an author I will definitely be looking out for in the future.

This book is amazing!
