About this listen

The chilling new psychological thriller from the #1 bestselling author of I Am Watching You.

It was their darkest secret. Three schoolgirls made a promise - to take the horrible truth of what they did to the grave.

Thirty years later, Beth and Sally have tried to put the trauma behind them. Though Carol has distanced herself from her former friends, the three are adamant that the truth must never come to light, even if the memory still haunts them.

But when some shocking news threatens to unearth their dark secret, Beth enlists the help of private investigator Matthew Hill to help her and Sally reconnect with estranged Carol - before the terrible act they committed as teenagers is revealed.

Beth wishes she could take back the vow they made.

But somebody is watching and will stop at nothing to ensure the secret stays buried. Now, with her beloved family in peril, can Beth still keep the promise?

This is a domestic drama, not a thriller per se.

I was rather bored halfway through and really found the male actor hilarious because he was trying to sound like Bruce Wayne. It was a fine story, but not a thriller as I'd thought.

average and easy listening

it was okay, certainly not gripping and no dramatic twists or turns anywhere in the book. bumbled along slowly, picked up slightly at the end and then finishes. Vanilla, if you like that kind of thing.

Not a chilling psychological thriller as described

It’s more of a domestic drama, based around the lives of three children, barely teenagers, who were sent to boarding school and lacked sufficient healthy parental care and support. They coped together, with something they should never have had to cope, and without loving adult support they believed they had done something terribly wrong. The story travels back and forth in time, showing how their secret affects them all as adults. I used to read a lot of Joanna Trollop’s novels, and had this been marketed in the way her books are, I think it would have got better reviews because the description would have matched listeners expectations. If you’re seeking a chilling psychological thriller, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Promising

3 girls, a deadly secret held since their school days...now its threatening to be revealed...

I have listened to quite a lot of thrillers now, I am by no means an expert...but its now taking more to impress me.

The Promise was only okay not brilliant, that being said I was excited to find out what happened even if I did guess quite a lot of it early on.
It did has an interesting narration style, each chapter narrated by a different character which a separate narrator...this was extra surprising when a male narrator chipped in what seemed like halfway through the book.
This was a nice easy listen, and entertaining few hours...but nothing spectacular.

Another great from Teresa Driscoll

Another great story line, so much emotion and character building. Loved it all. I love Teresa’s small nod to each book being in the same universe with the constant of Mathew and Melanie. Fast becoming one of my favourite authors ♥️

Interesting and good listen -listen first.

I am doing a binge listen to this series, now that I know it is a series as I am enjoying watching the progression of the main characters. Unfortunately when I started listening I didn't realise that this was the first book in the series, so this provided a lot of the background to what I was looking for in the other books. Although this book had twists and turns it was more about the emotions and impact on the girls and then them growing up and how something stays with them forever. I really found it interesting how each generation had its own issues and depression was explored and society's changing way of looking at it.
The Catholic element was explored and the fact that the first thought was to hide it and avoid a scandal resonated based on recent media stories.
All in all good listen but very different from the other books.
