About this listen

"Brilliant, shocking and very creepy. Mark Edwards has done it again." - Elly Griffiths, bestselling author of the Dr Ruth Galloway series

A perfect summer. A perfect stranger. A perfect nightmare.

When British twenty-somethings Ruth and Adam are offered the chance to spend the summer housesitting in New York, they can’t say no. Young, in love and on the cusp of professional success, they feel as if luck is finally on their side.

So the moment that Eden turns up on the doorstep, drenched from a summer storm, it seems only right to share a bit of that good fortune. Beautiful and charismatic, Eden claims to be a friend of the homeowners, who told her she could stay whenever she was in New York.

They know you’re not supposed to talk to strangers - let alone invite them into your home - but after all, Eden’s only a stranger until they get to know her.

As suspicions creep in that Eden may not be who she claims to be, they begin to wonder if they’ve made a terrible mistake....

The House Guest is the chilling new psychological thriller from the three million copy bestselling author of Here to Stay and Follow You Home.

The plot wasn't what I expected it to be, but I looked forward to listening to it and thought that the main narrator was great.

An enjoyable thriller

This book had a decent concept, a stranger accessing a home whilst people were house-sitting, under the guise of knowing the actual owners, who are uncontactable. Whilst all the premise was good the story never really delivered. An interesting start followed by a very unoriginal middle and an ending which was pretty much the only way it could have gone. Oddly has a male and female narrator but that's for chapters from different character's perspective. So you have a male doing poor female voices etc. Wouldn't bother unless it was very cheap and you were looking for a relatively short book.

Had promise but ultimately nothing original

I enjoyed this, plenty of twists and turns, I generally prefer books set in the UK but the US setting was apt for the story.

Good

Good but. slow at times but overall ok. the male narrator was horrible to listen to. I would've enjoyed the book more if he wasn't the narrator. very very annoying voice and tone

Not bad but narrator was annoying

This book started out very strong and very interesting. I didn't want to put it down. Then I was like what is actually happening here? I didn't like the progression of the story at all in the second half.

A young couple from the U.K. feel that things are finally going to work out. Adam a writer and Ruth an actress. Both have aspirations of making it big. When they have the chance to house sit in America for a couple on their travels they jump at the chance.

They settle in and Ruth is doing well with acting but Adam is not doing too well. One night there is a knock on the door in the pouring rain and drenched a young woman called Eden is looking for the homeowners and this is a surprise visit. They hesitate but as Eden seems to know so much about the couple they decide to let her stay. Things go well until one fateful night of booze that Eden supplies they drink until they are very drunk. Adam wakes up with the headache from hell and he is alone with not a lot of recollection of the previous night and no sign of Ruth his girlfriend and Eden. Then the nightmare begins....

The narration was not too bad but the female voice was my favourite
