About this listen

In 2061 a young scientist invents a time machine to fix a tragedy in his past. But his good intentions turn catastrophic when an early test reveals something unexpected: the end of the world.

A desperate plan is formed: recruit three heroes, ordinary humans capable of extraordinary things, and change the future.

Safa Patel is an elite police officer, on duty when Downing Street comes under terrorist attack. As armed men storm through the breach, she dispatches them all.

'Mad' Harry Madden is a legend of the Second World War. Not only did he complete an impossible mission - to plant charges on a heavily defended submarine base - but he also escaped with his life.

Ben Ryder is just an insurance investigator. But as a young man, he witnessed a gang assaulting a woman and her child. He went to their rescue and killed all five.

Can these three heroes, extracted from their timelines at the point of death, save the world?

Worth a listen

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand this started and ended really well. Very strong story line and great characters. There was momentum and intrigue. Then it sagged a bit in the middle and lost its way a bit.

It features three heroes who have to be extracted from their own timelines (yes! time machines!) in order to save the world. Their stories are brutal and human. But maybe one of them is a bit too human and the story drags as we follow Ben's emotional collapse and recovery.

I hope the next book gets a good edit!

Recommended with caution.

Surprisingly good

Not a fan of time travel type stories but this hooked me from the beginning. It was the performance by the narrator Carl Prekopp that banished my skepticism. I enjoyed it and will be getting the next one. Really good start to the story.

Fantastic!

I seldom review a book but this one was exceptional and I felt I needed to say so!
It is a “pretend you are not feeling too well so you can go into the other bedroom to listen late into the night” story. A story of friendship, love, determination and so much more.
R R Haywood is a new author to me but he seems a master of his craft.

Promising

Definitely a story of 3 parts - great, absorbing start and a good ending that build to future books nicely, but the middle sags. Still the plot is good and there's some intriguing characters. A very good read by itself and tees up a series nicely - can't wait to start book 2.

Evocative, provoking and can't put it down!

One of those books that grabs just. Characters you can understand a fair bit of violence - but I suppose its in context. The pictures conjured in your imagination are amazing. Off to get the next in the series!!

Don't even think about it, just buy it...

If at the end of this book, you haven't become so engrossed in the characters that you don't immediately look up the second, and third book in the series, then there is no hope for you!!
Ben, Saffa and Mad Harry, Malc & Con... love this series of books and have just finished them for probably the third time since buying last year. Great characters, Great narration, clever storyline(s), thought proving, surprising, laugh out loud, emotive and downright gripping.. definitely among my top ten.

I wish I could buy and listen to these books for the first time again!

Great… as the first book in the series

This was an enjoyable romp and the first half had me gripped, I couldn’t wait to get back to it.

Then it starts to sag, the focus on one characters spiral into depression is exhausting and slows the whole book to a crawl. If I were listening to this without the knowledge of this being part 1 of a trilogy I to would have been very disappointed. I’m glad I have only just discovered this series in 2021 and can move on to book 2 to continue the story. Having this in mind, I can’t wait to get on with the rest of the series.

The narrator is excellent, the pause, grace, accents and eloquence he brings to this is phenomenal, at times he had me smiling at how he dials down his tone to bring in the malice of a character, excellent work.

Looking forward to the rest and continuing the story with a great set of characters.
