Summary

Rory Miller's Facing Violence: Preparing for the Unexpected includes seven elements that must be addressed to bring self-defense training to something approaching complete. These elements are: legal and ethical implications, violence dynamics, avoidance, counter-ambush, breaking the freeze, the fight itself, and the aftermath. Training that dismisses any of these areas leaves you vulnerable.

A realistic and sensible look at the before, during, and after of violence

I enjoyed this audiobook. It is a good companion to “The Gift of Fear”. I'm off to learn how to dance with the monkeys!

A must for any martial artist or coach

And for any survivor of violence. This book discussed so much that I have never heard talked about before and I have taken so much from it. I feel more equipped to deal with any future situations; a lot to think about here.

Based in US but the main message relevant to everywhere

Any law advice given is based in US law but the overall messages and the thought processes behind them are relevant the whole world over.
Reader does a good job of bringing the text to life.

Another cold clear dose of reality from Sgt Miller

As a former practitioner of a martial art it's nice to have some of your assumptions confirmed by someone who's been there and returned.

However, Rory Miller goes beyond the fighting to show just what a small part physical skills play when thinking about your personal safety and the predators you may come in contact with.

A great read and sage advice and as ever he raises lots more questions to ponder on.

comprehensive

This book acknowledges the reality of interpersonal violence, different strategies for avoiding it and perspectives on violence if it can't be avoided. The book's chapters are arranged in chronological order from the lead up to the fight, the fight itself and, the aftermath. The legal advice sections are US based and the specifics won't apply elsewhere but much of the advice is still worthwhile when dealing with the authorities.

This isn't a book of techniques but does provide a necessary reality check for folks who think proficiency in their chosen martial art, no matter how realism based they claim to be, will by itself see them good in a violent confrontation. Definitely a book for anyone, martial artist or not, who has ever been in or imagined themselves to be at risk of violence.

A detailed, well researched honest book

Looks deep in to what violence is, fear and the reaction to Violence.

You can tell the author knows what he is talking about, this isn't a "Self Defence book" in the traditional sense, but is well worth a listen.

However; Chapter 9 is more applicable to the USA than the UK, as it is more about US Law

Highly recommended

Especially for martial arts teachers (to cascade to their students), young people feeling peer pressure from friends/family, frontline customer-facing staff, 'Hot-heads' looking to fight, security personnel, etc.

Explains the possible risks and various implications regarding use of force, including ways to avoid and de-escalate.

A brilliant book and so well narrated. i wish I'd have read this years ago.
