Summary

After five years' silence, a British intelligence asset has made contact from Moscow. Claiming to possess explosive information, he wishes to defect to the West. But the operation goes catastrophically wrong; the would-be defector betrayed by a rogue element at the highest level of US government. As a result, MI6's Margo Lane is ordered to deliver a message the White House won't forget. Margo's mission will take her to the violent heart of contemporary Russia, the edge of the civil war in Syria - and to a terrifying decision she had hoped she would never have to make.

Excellent

This is a great book, one of the best spy novels I have listened to in a long time. The description of Russia and the workings of British ,Russian and American security forces are fantastic. I feel that this is exactly how they work, ruthless, totally political, without remorse and cruel beyond understanding.A real gritty story

Excellent

However implausible some of the events or details might seem, this novel is remarkable in capturing what feels like “truth”—about Syria, about Russia, about national intelligence agencies and international relations. I have no personal experience in these areas, but this novel makes me feel: yes, that’s how it is, the melancholic reality.

Fabulous

Really enjoyed this. Quite an insight into the world of espionage. Narrator is fantastic. Probably more realistic than we’d like to believe.

Exciting, well written, authentic

Tim Sebastian’s deep knowledge of the Middle East and all its players underpins an all too believable story. I found the plot, the characters and the locations absolutely credible. No one comes out of it well …
