Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A rich, atmospheric WWII thriller from the award-winning author of Moskva and Nightfall Berlin.

An unlikely spy.

July, 1940. As Britain braces itself for invasion, ex-Tommy and safecracker Bill O'Hagan is glad to have escaped the battlefield. But when a job goes wrong, he finds himself forced to serve his country once more.

A former king.

Spurned by his government and fearing for his life, the Duke of Windsor flees to Portugal with the woman for whom he abdicated the throne, Wallis Simpson. As a web of Nazi trickery threatens to ensnare him, his fate and the fate of Britain rest on one man.

The fate of a nation in their hands.

Dropped on an occupied Channel Island without backup, Bill must crack an enemy safe and get its contents to safety. Failure will devastate any hope Britain has of winning the war.

But with the layers of deception and intrigue drawing ever more tightly around them, Bill and the Duke both learn they aren't the only players in this game. And Berlin - which has the Duke in its own sights - is plotting its greatest move yet....

Jack Grimwood matches Robert Harris, Joseph Kanon, Ken Follett and John le Carré thrill for thrill in this breathtaking WWII story of atmospheric suspense, daring espionage and political intrigue, set in the tense depths of Britain's darkest hour.

Terrific spy thriller.

I really enjoyed the characters, narration and storyline. I was hooked in the first few chapters and wasn’t let down after that!

Gripping thriller - worth sticking with

A little slow starting, but very strong ending. The number of pieces in play at the start was a little overwhelming, but soon came together to form a very good and complex story. Perhaps there could be a sequel?

Tense and gripping

This is a fascinating listen set on Alderney in July 1940. The story has been woven into historical fact and is really imaginative. I occasionally couldn't bear the tension and had to listen to something lighter for a while. However I kept coming back and I'm so glad I did as it did not disappoint.

Gripping story and excellent narrator

This really held my attention, combining thriller with some aspects of history. The ending was a little far fetched.
Simon Bubb is one of my favourite narrators and could read the telephone dictionary and it would sound interesting.

couldn't stop listening

I couldn't stop listening to this from start to finish. Verging on the truth with the right amount of added drama.

Good story with monotone narration

The premise of the book was very good very believable for lots of real events into weaved with what may have happened. The narrative made you want to listen more but I found the narration somewhat monotone. However it’s still worth a listen.
