Summary

World War II Germany: The German war machine has invaded Poland and is advancing west toward France.

In Berlin, Kurt Müller, an Abwehr signalman, discovers a colleague lying dead at his radio receiver. The criminal police dismiss the death as suicide, but Kurt is not convinced. Kurt follows a trail of mysteries, witnessing several atrocities that expose the Nazi regime for what it truly is. When the trail leads him to the German resistance, he faces the most difficult choices of his life. He must choose between his duty and his conscience, between his country and his family, between love and death.

Well worth reading

I expected something average or below considering this was refused by publishers. However, it is a great story, maintaining varying levels of tension as it progresses. It has very well drawn, interesting characters. It is not 'high' literature, but is well worth reading. I certainly do not regret it.

Well researched and full of plot twists!

JJ Toner has done his research about WW2 Germany, and intertwines his story with real world events well. Very intense in places and quite descriptive. The plot is stretched out too much is some places but other than that fantastic book!

All in all, a good listen

Liked the story. Took an age to get used to the narrator - he isn't a character voices man. Worth a listen for sure but I think I'd be disappointed if I'd paid for the book.

Tense and gripping story.

My first book by JJ Toner. There will definitely be more. A thriller that had me enthralled from the very beginning. Some parts hard to listen to but a very different perspective of life in Germany at the beginning of the 2nd World War. Very highly recommended.

A scary time for everyone.

This was a very frightening time for everyone in Germany. They were all paranoid
Because the slightest slipped of the tongue may mean that someone would report them to the Gustapo. This included all Germans and even their decorated Officers - no one was safe.

A purchase mistake that turned out not to be?

As per review title I thought that this was a different book but another mistake that turned out tops for me. Not the usual rubbish associated with this type of spy novel. It proves to be well researched yet certainly suspenseful and believable. Even the love interest is interesting and well presented. I certainly intend to continue this series.

Good

Not exactly hard work, thin characterisation, fairly predictable outcome. I’m suspicious of the factual bases but I don’t know enough to criticise unlike many of the reviewers here. Generally, Gildart Jackson can read a trade manual on wall fixings and I’d be a happy bunny - but some of his readings are better than others. So maybe the book was lightweight and lacked the character he usually brings to a narration - but he still made it interesting enough for me to enjoy it.

German speaker required

In my vies a book purporting to take place in Germany requires a narrator with a knowledge of the language. This one obviously doesn’t have an inkling. One major irritation is his pronunciation of “Oberst” which he pronounces “o’berst” as were it an Irish name.
And for the author’s information they did not have the foggiest idea of what a pizza was in Berlin in ‘41.
