About this listen

It could be your average suicide. A man found dead in his car, engine running, parked at the end of a lonely track, a tube feeding deadly fumes from the exhaust through the window. Except for the seven-year-old boy still breathing in the boot...

For Jonathan Kellaway, the past is somewhere he chooses not to go. Dead friends, lost lovers and a family dynasty hell-bent on self- destruction lie buried there.

But if he is to uncover the truth, he must confront all the secrets which have consumed his life, and which may yet consume him...

A good story but longer than it needed to be

A great story especially for those of us who know St Austell well. The storyline was well researched and real places in the area as described. It lost it’s way a bit in the middle, it could have been shorter, but the ending was unexpected and pleasantly unpredictable. Not one of his best but worth a read.

Good, Classic Goddard

… and it may have even ended on a slightly positive note, with some hope. (And, in that sense, not always typical Goddard). Really enjoyed it!

Another great mystery from the master with lots of twists along the way. Great narration too.

A storyline stretched to the limit

Top author. A plot stretched to the limit of believability. Character development keeps the twists and turns from falling apart and becoming a paradory of the genre. I always appreciate the effort of developing new central characters rather than having same hero carry the plot into a series from 1 to a 100.. A lazy authors fall back, whuch seems to make the hero accident prone. A solid novel that succeeds in being different.

Excellent plot brilliantly written and told

The story was told brilliantly and the twist was so clever. I found myself emotional and understanding about things I would not have believed before.

Narrator is perfect ..

The narrator makes this story come to life, he couldn’t be more perfect. The characters are interesting and I really enjoyed how the story spans a family over decades. I absolutely recommend this book.

Well narrated but not Godard’s best

I find Goddard’s books a bit irritating. Quite difficult to get inside the narrator’s personality or motivations. The plots are crafty but over complicated and this one was no exception. So, as with other Goddards, I liked the first half much more than the latter parts.

Subtle sinister and riveting

The author has created yet another complex novel of many layers, observations and polarities.
Very well narrated even though I must say Michel Kitchen and Goddard fit as a combination to perfection but I admit my bias.
Recommend utterly.
