Summary

On a mild autumn afternoon in 1882, William Trenchard sits smoking his pipe in the garden of his comfortable family home. When the creak of the garden gate heralds the arrival of an unexpected stranger, he is puzzled but not alarmed. He cannot know the destruction this man will wreak on all he holds most dear.

Painting the Darkness

A solid mistaken identity story told with Goddard's usual mix of layered characters, flawed motives and heartbreak.
We folllow a young woman who has been married a few years when her fiance 'returns' having supposedly drowned 7 years earlier. We 'watch' this situation develop from the point of view of the girl, her husband, the fiance's brother - who has inherited a large estate- and the fiance's mother. Some believe him, some dont, others seek to find proof to have it decided one way or the other. The listener is pulled from one side to the other - manipulated deftly by Robert Goddard's handling of the plot.
Great book, well and clearly narrated.

Excellent

Robert Goddard at his best. Twists and turns, throughout the book, leaving the listener unsure for most of the novel. Thoroughly enjoyable .
Michael Kitchen’s narration is beyond reproach, and he pitches it perfectly.

Exceedingly twisty plot

This book has one of the twistiest plots I’ve ever come across. Cleverly written so largely believable. Michael Kitchen an excellent narrator.

A complete listen!

It's very rare to be so engaged in such a long read. But I was so intrigued , so fascinated, by these characters, these old fashioned aristocrats that I fell in love!
I occasionally needed a rest between chapters - sometimes I was knee deep in the machinations, the deceit - but oh how disappointed I was when it ended and what an ending.
Try this story if you like old fashioned good solid story telling, I did and I'm hard to please😊

A compelling and totally gripping tale that does not let up until the very last lines

This is without doubt the most exciting and gripping story from a master writer
It has shades of A woman in in White a melodrama. A mystery and A story which from the beginning is totally compelling
A Victorian melodrama but with so many twists and turns it will keep you up all night to find out The Truth

A complex story

I wasn’t sure I was going to enjoy this. I’m not really keen on period pieces.
It took a while to get going, and I did get a little impatient at times, but the scene setting took quite a while to get there.
I do prefer much more pacy storylines, but this was quite enjoyable, and well narrated in a tone befitting the era.

Intricate plot cleverly woven

From the very first to last page this story had me gripped. The plot was well thought out and the characters well developed. The narration was first class and lent it self well to the assortment of voices. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Gripping

First of all stick with the opening chapters... I really didn’t think this book was for me initially and I also found the narration a bit flat. How wrong I was and how glad I was I stuck with it. This is a riveting story magnificently narrated. The tale twists and turns constantly but without being contrived. Brilliant storyline and narration at its very best.

The usual excellence from Goddard.

Another slow burner and written, as usual, with a great spectrum of characters. So well written and narrated that there’s barely a a tune when you can lose interest. Well worth a credit.
