Summary

Feminism is a quest for the liberation of women from patriarchy. Feminism strives for a world in which women are not oppressed. Feminism prioritises exposing and ending male violence towards women and girls.

This is Julie Bindel's feminism, a definition born of 40 years at the front line of the feminist movement. Why then, she asks, is feminism the only social justice movement in the world that is expected to prioritise every other issue before pursuing its own objective of women's liberation? Why does the movement appear to be moving backwards, accommodating the rights and feelings of men and leaving women in the cold? Women make up half the global population, yet why is feminism still treated as a minority movement?

In this searing and groundbreaking book, Bindel deconstructs the many pervasive myths about feminism - Do women really want what men have? Can men be feminists? Are women liberated by sexual violation? - assessing whether feminism has achieved its goals and debunking theories that second wave feminism is irrelevant and one-dimensional.

Bindel shines a light on the most important issues, including pornography, sexual violence and prostitution. Drawing on Bindel's own experiences, as well as countless interviews with women and girls of all ages and backgrounds (as well as contributions from commentators such as Gloria Steinem and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), Feminism for Women presents a clear-sighted view of why feminism is a proud social movement that every woman on the planet benefits from.

The invisible forces of misogyny affect us all.

This book is a call to arms to reclaim feminism for all women.

Only together can we resist and overcome.

Essential reading for women and girls (and men who love them)

I had felt uneasy about the dilution of women’s rights to be all inclusive but couldn’t nail this uneasiness down. Julie Bindel articulated why we should all up in arms about this in a measured and well researched way.

A must read for every woman

Whether you agree with 2nd wave feminism or not this is a fantastic book and essential to understand the roots of modern feminism. Julie is a joy to listen too, I'm pleased she read it herself, it made it all the more authentic.

Enlightenment!

Delivered beautifully by the author , I couldn’t put this down . This is the book I wish I’d read years ago and one I wish all mothers give to their children , to share and discuss . What a journey ! To thank all those who have committed their lives to improving others experience and life chances is too small a concept . But , like turning an oil tanker around , step by step , generation by generation, let’s go forward not backwards . This book goes along way to explain why 🙏🙏🙏

Challenging my Understanding of Feminism

What an eye opening argument for feminism. I have been very comfortable in calling myself a feminist for as long as I have known the word. I didn’t understand, truly, until now my unintended harm of liberalism.
I am of a generation that has benefited from feminist actions and have taken these rights for granted. Unaware of the history of the women’s liberation movement.
I thoroughly enjoyed the exposure of challenging ideas and thinking how it does and does not fit in with my values.
This book definitely deserves a second reading.

Clarity, honesty, good sense and hope

I have remained silent on the issues raised in this book because I understood how contentious they were and feared reprisal, It seems my fear was not unjustified. I also avoided the topics altogether, so that I could not even discuss it: a sort of protective ignorance. Alas, the world wanted in anyway, and as society demanded I conform, I thought I'd better understand things before committing to their ideology of choice. Ignorance was bliss until it became obligatory. Read this book if you don't understand what's going on in the world of feminism. Read it even if you think you do. Read it especially if you are a liberal feminist. or trans or a man. But most of all, if you're a woman, you probably need to read it. When a woman this brave speaks up so frankly for our benefit and liberation from our oppression by men, we have a duty to listen. A true role model, Bindel is an inspiration.
