Summary
This book examines one of the most contested issues facing feminists, human rights activists, and governments around the globe - the international sex trade. For decades, the liberal left has been conflicted as to whether pro-prostitution activists or abolitionists hold the correct view, and debates are ongoing as to who holds the key to the solutions facing the women and girls involved.
Over the course of two years, Bindel conducted 250 interviews in almost 40 countries, cities, and states, traveling around Europe, Asia, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and East and South Africa. Visiting legal brothels all around the world, Bindel got to know pimps, pornographers, survivors of the sex trade, and the women being sold by men classed as "business entrepreneurs". Whilst meeting feminist abolitionists, pro-prostitution campaigners, police and government officials, and the men who drive the demand, Bindel uncovered the lies, mythology, and criminal activity that shroud this global trade and suggests here a way forward for the women seeking to abolish the oldest oppression.
Informed by the lived human experience of those interviewed, this book will be of great interest to feminists, students, criminal justice advocates, criminologists, and human rights activists.

Powerful and excellently researched
I would have preferred if the author had read her own work and it seemed so personal sometimes

Sets the facts straight on prostitution
Like anyone in today's terminally online world, I can't avoid the whole "sex work" debate. I have to state my position on "sex work" in all sorts of contexts and arenas, and risk being ousted if I don't deliver the "right" answers. But what are the right answers? My moral intuition isn't enough to go by, and like most people, the pressure to conform to the norm is powerful. Being swayed by the pro-decriminalisation lobby is the easy option. I'm glad I decided to listen to this book to clarify my stance.
Julie Bindel is one of the bravest, most articulate and well researched feminists of our time, delivering excellent arguments against the clamour made by patriarchal forces still very much at work in today's society. She's one of my feminist heroes and I am grateful she took the time to write and publish such an important book. I now know where I stand and how to argue my case when pushed to take a stance. My ONLY wish with this audiobook was that it was read by her, as with her other book "Feminism for Women"!! Just not right to hear it in an American accent! 😅

Badly written
It could have been much better written to explain the issue but instead the author kept on telling stories about her and her action and jumping from one to another without clearly going into the point
She has a good point but badly presented
