About this listen

From the creator of the award-winning ITV series Prime Suspect, this is Jane Tennison's story, from rookie police officer to fully fledged detective.

Every legend has a beginning....

During 1974 and 1975, the IRA subjected London to a terrifying bombing campaign. In one day alone, they planted seven bombs at locations across central London. Some were defused - some were not.

Jane Tennison is now a fully fledged detective. On the way to court one morning, Jane passes through Covent Garden Underground station and is caught up in a bomb blast that leaves several people dead and many horribly injured. Jane is a key witness but is adamant that she can't identify the bomber. When a photograph appears in the newspapers showing Jane assisting the injured at the scene, it puts her and her family at risk from IRA retaliation.

Good Friday is the eagerly awaited date of the annual formal CID dinner, due to take place at St Ermin's Hotel. Hundreds of detectives and their wives will be there. It's the perfect target. As Jane arrives for the evening, she realises that she recognises the parking attendant as the bomber from Covent Garden. Can she convince her senior officers in time, or will another bomb destroy London's entire detective force?

Gripping thriller from start to finish

I am working my way through all the Lynda La Plante books and have enjoyed every one of them so far. The stories are gripping, details fantastically written and beautifully executed by drawing the listener into the book.

The narrator ruined it slightly for me

I love Lynda’s books and can’t get enough from the Tennison series. However, on this occasion I found the narrator, whilst being suitable for the main character, not as good as in previous books and her high pitched tone grated at times.

One of my favourite books in the series

Enjoyed this book and the development of the character through the police force along with London at the time the story was set.

Great story,
Great narration by Jessica Ball,
I don’t understand the problem people are having with the narrator. She’s great !

The narrator is truly awful

Ms Bell is an awful narrator. She cannot even read English and pronounces Harwich as Haar Witch, for example.

As other listeners have commented - never again. Does she get paid for this? There is something childish, yet patronising about her characters, leaving the listener feeling belittled.

Interesting

I loved how the book gave an insight into the sexism that was prevalent in the police force workplace in the 80's. Not sure how 'a real page turner' translates into audible book format...but yes it was 'needy listening' for want of a better phrase.

It would be good to have ratings on books before buying based on level of language used, and level of violence and serial activity. I would rare this book as wear headphones around kids as there is some swearing and a few inappropriate scenes for little ones. Maybe an age 15 rating?

Enjoyed the first book more but this is still good.

Overall a good book. Tension comes over as a little more of a snob and less likeable but still a good listen. Narration ok, but not great.

Excellent story

After listening to the first 2 books in this series I moved on to the third, the story is excellent, full of period detail and attitudes, lots of drama and twists and turns. I was put off in the first chapter by the narrator, her voice seemed all wrong and lacked differentiation between characters. I think Julie Teal made a much better job of the first two books, hover, eIther the narrator improved as the book went on or I just got carried along by the story and forgot about her voice. All in all still a good listen.

And so the story continues!

Yet another excellent production that continues to present the background and development of Jane Tennyson providing an excellent background for the future and giving the listener a view of Police work and the importance of teamwork. An easy and comfortable listen or read.
