Summary
In 2023's Barbie Movie, America Ferrera's iconic speech magically deprogrammed the Barbies from patriarchy. And now Michelle Minnikin is here to do the same for women of the real world.
From our first days on Earth, we're taught what it means to be a Good Girl. Look good, be nice, stay quiet, and take care of everyone else... The list goes on, and at the heart of it all, one message shines through: Do as you're told or pay the price.
In Good Girl Deprogramming, Michelle shines a light on the sinister nature, tactics and tricks of coercive control that not only program us to be Good Girls but keep us in that mindset for the years, decades, and generations that follow. With ferocity, empathy, and just enough humor to prevent the idea of being brainwashed by patriarchy too depressing, Michelle shares stories, facts and actionable advice that empowers women to break free from our own programming and rediscover who we truly are. Good Girl Deprogramming isn't just a book, it's a movement. One that takes each of us by the hand and invites us to step into the life that is powerfully, beautifully and unapologetically yours. Are you in?
Michelle Minnikin is a Chartered Psychologist, Coach and author with over 20 years of experience in leadership and organizational development, employee selection and assessment, coaching, and personal development. Michelle has a passion for transformative change. She is dedicated to helping women design their own ideal lives, guiding them towards greater clarity, purpose, and fulfilment. Michelle's own journey towards her Good Girl Deprogramming started with her ADHD diagnosis in December 2020, a revelation that brought clarity and understanding to her life.

The world will never look the same
A fascinating and thought provoking listen. Once you start to see the deeply embedded forces at play in society that keep women small, you can’t unsee them. But the good news is the book gives you a whole host of strategies and actions to start to deprogramme yourself.

Satisfyingly scratches an itch!
If you feel you need permission to be yourself (spoiler alert - you don’t!) this is the book for you.
There’s not much in the book that I wasn’t already aware of, primarily in the context of intimate personal relationships, but Michelle’s dissection and application of these ideas and theories more broadly shines a very bright - and at times uncomfortable - light on societal (patriarchal) strategies that perpetuate and normalise the manipulation and subjugation of women and girls.
Although covering many very serious, disturbing, upsetting and infuriating issues, Michelle’s reading style, with personal examples and anecdotes, helps to maintain a dynamic sense of possibility and hope.
The book is not a prescription but rather, raises questions and provides suggestions, ideas and permission (again, not needed) to be our authentic selves, and do what we will to change the world, one ‘good girl’ (or preferably two) at a time.

A thought provoking read for our times
Good Girl Deprogramming is an empowering and thought-provoking listen that challenges societal norms and expectations placed on women. Through relatable insights and actionable advice, Michelle invites listeners to break free from the 'good girl' mindset that often leads to burnout and self-doubt. I felt a whole range of emotions when listening to the book - lots of outrage but also optimism.
Michelle's narration is engaging and authentic, making the message even more impactful. Whether you're at the start of your personal growth journey or feeling a bit jaded about the topic, this audiobook offers valuable perspectives to reclaim your identity and live authentically.
Highly recommended for women seeking empowerment and confidence and men to hear our perspective.

Highly recommended - a call to action
For full disclosure, Michelle – the author – is my partner.
I am writing a review as I have lived through the 2+ years of effort and work that have gone into writing this book.
I have witnessed first-hand all of the passion, research, soul-searching, painful memories, injustices, empowering stories, and numerous drafts to get to a launch.
Plus, the countless stories of women (and men) who have read this and what this book gave them in processing their own lives and what to work on as part of their development.
If you are looking for a way to get started on changing your own life, kick start another woman’s transformation, or a corporate looking to support your present/future female leaders programmes, then this is it.
I genuinely see this as not just an audiobook, but a movement that will impact the world and the lives of many women and girls. And society as a whole. Michelle’s narration and personality bring the wisdom, stories, and experiences to life.
Having read and listened to it, I’d also recommend this for any man who wants to become a better ally to the women in their lives.
We may not have had to experience all of the same societal conditioning as women, yet this will help open eyes as to how we can help in changing our own behaviours, and the systems that perpetuate oppression and disadvantage.
A worthy listen and getting involved in a much-needed societal change.

Everyone NEEDS to resd/listen to this book!!!
Michelle is a wizard with words and within this spellbinding book I have found great comfort in the honesty, reality and transparency of the content.
I went into listening to this book with half an assumption I knew what I would hear but chose to listen anyway as I follow Michelle on socials and truly believe she's connected into a subject that seems so obvious but we are NOT talking about enough.
The facts were astonishing, the deep dives into certain aspects like how in prison camps the same techniques behind the theory of Good Girl Programming are so compatible. I mean WHAT!!
I have learnt so much and feel more determined to stop this shiz, call it out when I see it more and become a true changemaker to help others see this, open their eyes to the world of conformity we've all been living in for way too long!
Huge thank you to you Michelle, my ADHD brain loved listening in (I'd love yo say I could also page turn the physical book book i'd be lying). I felt heard, seen and empowered by this audio book!
Go listen in!!!!

An important Audio book for all women
This book stands out as being the only non fiction audio book I have got to the end of. I found the content of this book very thought provoking. There are so many ways we have been conditioned as women and girls, and lots of them are not obvious. There are lots of quick wins you can achieve straight away through reading this book, already I have stopped using the word just in my emails. There is an associated pdf workbook which I only just realised was there when I finished the book. Tables and bullet points are very difficult for audio books so these elements were confusing. A 2nd voice to read out Quotes would have helped with listenability. In summary this was such a good audiobook, I am glad I bought it and will be dipping in and out of both it and the pdf in the coming months. I may yet also buy the printed version as it is definitely the type of book you want to pass on to other women.
