About this listen
Guardian Angel is that rare memoir that grabs you by the shoulders with an urgency that screams, “Pay attention!”
It leaps to life with an immediacy and relevance that few books achieve.
Beginning with her solitary childhood in London, it took years for Melanie Phillips to understand her parents’ emotional frailties and even longer to escape from them. But Phillips inherited her family’s strong Jewish values and a passionate commitment to freedom from oppression.
Through her poignant story of transformation and separation, we gain insight into the political uproar that has engulfed the West. Britain’s vote to leave the EU, the rise of far-Right political parties in Europe, and the stunning election of Donald Trump all involve a revolt against the elites by millions.
Guardian Angel is not only an affecting personal story, but it provides a vital explanation why the West is at a critical crossroads today.

“Melanie Phillips has been one of the brave and necessary voices of our time, unafraid to speak the language of moral responsibility in an age of obfuscation and denial." (Jonathan Sack)

Better than expected…
I have always liked Melanie on the BBC’s Moral Maze and only realised after reading this book that she has such a deep and well thought out position on the topics she touches.
More of Melanie needed please….. look forward to more from the author on Audible.

A very important message
Refreshingly honest account of an unexpected transition from left wing ideology and bitterness to common sense. Her thinking and conclusions are not rigid or partisan but flexible and based on evidence, true compassion and life in the real world. I did find a missing bit towards the end; the viewpoint of Palestinians; their hardship and struggle. That would have made it feel more balanced and perhaps could have been included in her compassion and understanding of people and all our struggle to navigate through life.

Sane, humane, yet defensive and unsure
Much to agree with about the cultural loss of nerve of the West in general and Britain in particular. The author comes over as perceptive and honest, and compensates for her uncertainties through as defensive rigidity.
I find the critique of woke activists attacking Israel for daring to defend itself as justified. The assertions about the undermining by the progressive left of family values also ring true. The parochial and exclusive attitudes of the self-congratulatory British Left dismissive of any view beyond their own reflect the narcissistic failure of the US Left to keep in touch with the concerns of the poor and vulnerable.
The major flaw in argument is the utter dismissal of the reality of climate change.
You can't win 'em all.

Brilliant Book
Melanie Phillips’ experience with the left mirrors my own, as do her subsequent thoughts and political development. Extremely well written and well read by Anna Cordell. Loved it.

Brave and brutally honest
Melanie's love of Britain and its people as well as her commitment to telling truth clearly warrant her status as public enemy number one. This is about the most anti-establishment book imaginable!
Her story doesn't only devastate the reputation of the Guardian but the entire "intellectual" sphere of the left.
Thank you Melanie and more power to you!

The courage and integrity of Melanie Philips in the pursuit of truth and justice.
Melanie Philips delivers a truly human story informed by the family values imparted to her by her mother and father. It is hardly a coincidence therefore that much of Melanie’s story relates to her deep concern for the future of the UK nation due to its abandonment of family values and how enthusiastically the ruling parties embrace moral and cultural relativism through the implementation of ruinous education policies and the pursuit of delusional diversity, equity, and inclusion policies. The UK is systematically defiling its future and is shockingly proud of it.

Essential reading.
Melanie Phillips has written an excellent book summarising the breakdown of British society. The book is well written, easy to listen to and full of common sense. Essential reading for anyone who wonders what has become of Britain.

Joined the Dots
As a parent right now and someone who lived through the 1970’s through to today the perspectives presented in the book resonates. I too have moved philosophically and for the same reasons, but in a less thoughtful way. To me this book synthesised and crystallised a lot of parameters in that personal journey.

Fearless assessment of the far left in the UK.
A compelling memoir that had me hooked from start to finish. A must read (or listen) for anyone trying to make sense of what is happening in British politics and culture over the last three decades.

courageous woman
I have great respect for Melanie Philips. I would have liked more details, and to have heard Melanie herself narrating
interesting that audible sells this title but none of her others, which I interpret as de platforming. come on Audible - learn some courage from Melanie and let's have the opportunity to get all the angles, not just the PC ones.
