Summary

Book Five in the Tyack & Frayne Mystery series.

The wedding is just the beginning...Gideon and Lee have spent a year in chaotic married bliss, with all the trimmings - a dog, tricky in-laws, and a baby girl they both adore. But even the best of lives can be fragile, and a shocking family loss hits their new world like a demolition ball.

Gideon has little energy left to investigate a murder that's taken place in the fields outside Dark. He still has his duties to his community, though, and with Lee at his side, he begins to unfold the mysterious death of Farmer John Bowe. It's harvest time, ancient West Country magic in the air, and rumors are flying through the village of an enemy Gideon thought he'd left behind long ago.

Can the beast of Bodmin possibly be real? Everything in Gideon's stoical police-sergeant's nature says no. But Lee has taught him to see the world differently, and now they must pool their resources to unmask a killer before more lives are lost - and somehow find a way to mend their shattered family, too.

An emotional roller coaster

I love these books and this one really tugs at your heart from many directions. These books have become better with richer characters and story beats and I am thrilled to have had the chance to listen to them.

The most deliciously stressful yet!

My love for Fox's writing has no bounds but damn did she make me sweat in this particular installment! First the eerie corpse road vision Gideon had. Then the issue with Tamsin. Then the murders and finally the cherry on the cake penultimate scare. Not to spoil any plot but this is one of the only times I genuinely felt the threat of main character death with no plot armor in sight... I absolutely loved it! And the narration was superb as always in these series! I cant get enough DRAMA from any other series! Bravo!

Great instalment of this series....

I ADORE this series, and these two men and their growing mental connection are just amazing. Another well-written, eloquent and topical [fracking] story from the author. I cried real tears at their heartbreak over baby Tamsyn, and yes, Elowen did come across as the bitch of the piece...but all's well that ends well, she says hopefully. Baby Tamsyn, the little poltergeist 😉.

Another fantastic and captivating story

A lot more emotion and drama than the previous stories - if you thought this couldn’t happen then it must have been a pleasant surprise. The more I learnt about the increasing connection between lee and gid the less I understood but I had expected this to happen. It feels good though and only enhances the story to be totally mesmerising and fascinating. For a bit I feared that the story would go down a darker road and end in sadness and break the positive energy but the way it turned out gives the hope that despite drama and dark moments which are part of the fabric of life there will be a positive energy carried forward which helps the characters to get through all obstacles and get stronger as a pair, a family and a community. As the characters around the trio are evolving as well there are more moments of witty humour and laughter. More to follow thankfully so the pleasurable journey is not to end yet.
