Summary

How much do you really know about how the human body works, and how it reacts to food, exercise, nutrition, and the environment? While most of us have read about at least one fad diet, we're left wondering about the greater biochemistry, psychology, sociology, and physiology of the obesity crisis in the United States.

Gut Reactions by chemist Simon Quellen Field shows us how our bodies react to food and the environment, and how our brain affects what and how much we eat, and in turn, is affected by what we eat. It shows why some diets work for some people but not for others, based on genetics, previous weight history, brain chemistry, environmental cues, and social pressures. It explores how dozens of hormones affect hunger and satiety and interact with the brain and the gut to regulate feeding behavior. And it explains the addictive nature of foods that interact with the same dopamine and opioid receptors in the brain that cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, and nicotine do.

Whether you're looking to lose weight, put on muscle mass, or simply understand how your metabolism or gut microbiome is affecting your food cravings, Field has the scientific answers for you.

informative

very interesting and scary, whipped me into reconsidering what and how I eat. hard to follow in audio format at times given a lot of scientific names/terms.half of those did not stick, but at least it gave me a good enough picture of complexities of various hormones, amino acids, bacteria and other mechanisms inside our bodies controlling weight, appetite, blood sugar levels, etc.

Everything you need to know about diet and weight

Everything you need to know about the impact your diet has on your body and how that impacts your weight.

Hard going in places with medical terms and processes but still very relevant.

The end of the book gives hope in the form of solutions and actions that will give you power over your lifestyle and weight and diet related health.

This book has given me the push I needed to intervene with the diets of those I love for the better.

Need a BSc to fully understand this book.

Overall, very informative. Would certainly help someone with no prior knowledge of fat loss. May be a difficult read for people without a science background.

Good information

Lot of new things. It was practical
However spent too much time describing bacteria etc. Not like we can do anything wt that sorta details. Narration was rather poor though

Excellent information

If you aren't already interested in the subject, you might find this boring as there isn't really any narrative. However I found this very engaging, a dense stream of solid information.

Interesting info, difficult to digest

Quite dry information that I think comes across better in a physical book, or could be improved by more powerful story telling.

Helped make sense of weight gain

I have plenty of books like this but somehow this one made more sense to me. Love the way the short chapters are broken down. Great explanation of Type 2 diabetes. Good tips on helping your body maintain homeostasis. Will be recommending to friends and family....is there a sequel by this author?

Very informative

Like most scientific book it would lend itself better to written media than audio, but still, it goes down reasonably well, all the information is very well given and justified and plenty of actionable advice is given. Great read overall.
