Summary
Ben Pearson has spent the last 19 years of his life fighting crime. He is in the elite Roads Policing Unit of West Yorkshire Police, featured in the hit TV series Police Interceptors showing on Channel 5. As a decorated officer, he has driven in the fastest, most dangerous pursuits. Arrested murders, rapists, alongside high-profile burglars. Taken down the most violent of offenders, bringing them to justice. Unbeknown to Ben, his greatest fight was yet to come.
After dealing with a series of heinous, fatal collisions and losing his parents, Ben’s mind became his worst enemy. Handcuffed Emotions: A Police Interceptor’s Drive into Darkness, tells of his fight, not only for his family, his health, and his sanity, but against a system that failed him. Ben’s journey stretches from his early training days as a recruit, through the reality of life as a police officer and known TV personality into the dark depths of PTSD. The incidents are real. His emotions overwhelming. The illness devastating. His remarkable handling of it courageous.
Handcuffed Emotions is a must listen for anyone who had suffered debilitating traumas and faced mental illness. It is both enlightening, thought provoking, and brings hope to those who suffer in silence.

Eye Opening, Heart Warming and Heart Breaking.
Like so many others, I watched, and enjoyed watching Police Interceptors. The show did a great job of showing some of what is happening every day on our streets. It covered some of the difficult scenes where people had been seriously, or fatally injured. Such scenes were covered careful, to communicate the tragedy, but to protect the viewing public from anything too disturbing.
The interview segments with officers in the event of a serious incident seemed to allow the officers the freedom to let us know that they were affected, but never really have a sense of the compounding effects of such responding to such incidents on the officers.
Ben has created a window to his life and experience of front line policing; how he thought about his career at different stages of his life, how what he saw affected him and those around him. His commentary on the events he witnessed is considered, and allows you to get a small understanding of why such events were traumatic, without resorting to overly graphic descriptions.
This is the side of all emergency service operations the public really needs to see. The shift in television programming to include coverage of the police, fire, ambulance, air ambulance, coastguard, mountain rescue, and other safety and rescue services was important. It opened the public's eyes to some of what happens, and importantly to how those that choose these career paths help us. But perhaps the other side of these careers needs more air time.
There needs to be more discussion about how people are affected by this work, and what is, and more importantly is not being done to help and support them.
As Ben mentions, improvements have been made, and maybe his life would have been different if everything had taken place twenty years later. But there is always more that can be done, and perhaps putting that before the general public is necessary to really bring about change. This book was definitely a step in the right direction.

a must read
I first found Ben Pearson on You Tube, talking about some of his experiences as a serving Police Officer. What a gorgeous Yorkshire accent. I could listen to that all day!!! However, some of his experiences resonated with mine. not the dealing with road traffic collisions etc but with being threatened with and, sometimes experiencing violence and dealing with people who don't want to hear what you have to say. I've been a child protection social worker for almost 30 years and even when parents have willfully and deliberately hurt their children, the social worker is in the wrong as far as they're concerned. These sorts of incidences are not "water off a ducks back", they stay with you and the memories leave scars.
This book gives a very powerful insight into what the life of a Traffic officer can be like and the personal toll it can take. imagine being afraid to pick up your new, much longer for, baby son because you've come to the belief that you are somehow a risk to him?
I bought this and Ben's new book in paperback and then added the audio version because this man has given so much and I want to say thank you in a way that is tangible. Ben has lost the job he loved because of the trauma of what he experienced. He still has a family to take care of so reading his books helps with that. It also helps to understand that complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a very real risk. Not all superhero's wear capes and their pants on the outside. Equally though not all disabilities are visible.
This book is a life changer!!

A difficult, but true reflection of humanity
Ben has given all he has, and more to help the community, including those who don’t necessarily deserve it. He has dealt with things none of us could imagine. He has done so much, and it broke, no shattered him. This is an extremely good listen. I found it difficult at times and I had to stop it a few times. However, I did listen, and I now appreciate what he has given to the everyone. Thankyou Ben. I hope your life becomes enjoyable again.

Fanyastic
Brutally honest account of how the job of Policing chews you up and spits you out. The system let Ben and I dare say countless other bobbies down. It will probably continue to do so in the future, but I hope this book is read by the "corporates" in police services around the world and more is done to help these people.
I've learned a lot about mental health from this book.
