As usable a great story impeccably read. Truly worth listening to, from start to finish.

Spellbinding

loved the complexities of this novel the subject matter must have been quite new when Ruth wrote it. I am sure it would have been a help to the women's refuge cause.

prescient

My first Wexford story. My biggest problem was with the inspector's supposed Sussex accent, which was miles away from Midhurst. I think I'd have preferred a bit more character development and a less busy plot but it was an OK for a day's listen.

Dodgy Sussex accent

Another excellent Ruth Rendell novel superbly read. A difficult topic - domestic abuse - but skilfully handled as ever.

Excellent

An intricate Wexford mystery with some sub plots making a very interesting book. The narration by Nigel Anthony was very good, as usual, with all his character voices.

Interesting.

The best narrator, good expression, visualisation and pacing. Builds the story and suspense beautifully.

RR gives the plot, social context and police procedure, all sprinkled with insights into Wexford’s family background and relationship with Burden, organically and cleverly interwoven in her inimitable style.

Enjoyably shockingly brilliant.

Twisty and Turny

Brilliant. Great story. Beautifully read. Wexford sounded just like George Baker, who played him in the series.

Wonderfully narrated

I nearly gave up on the story early on as I did not find it interesting and the reader made some of the “working class” voices too shrill and irritating. The second half concentrated on a different plot and was much better I thought the author wrote it very well although it was surprisingly dated in some places and forward thinking in others. Harrowing stuff on the theme of domestic violence. Mr Wexford is an intriguing and believable character, however his daughters usually come across as spoilt and overprivileged. In this book the author allows the elder daughter to take a more mature role in the proceedings.
