About this listen

In a realm where toxic mist sweeps the lands and magic is forbidden, all Bleak wants is a cure for her power.

Still grieving the death of her guardian and dangerously self-medicating with alcohol, Bleak is snatched from her home by the Commander of the King's Army and summoned to the capital. But the king isn't the only one interested in Bleak's powers.

The leader of an infamous society of warriors, the Valia Kindred, lays claim to her as well, and Bleak finds herself in the middle of a much bigger battle than she anticipated.

Heart of Mist is the gripping first book in The Oremere Chronicles, a fantasy series of epic proportions.

Some great ideas but felt much too rushed

I kept zoning out trying to listen to this. There was some great expectation subversion and characters but the story feels much too rushed to me. I found that the pace robbed the writing of much of it's emotional weight so by about half way through I'd stopped caring and engaging with the characters. Such a shame because there are some genuinely wonderful choices in this book.

Not For Me

I really tried to like this book, but after eight hours of listening, I just couldn't listen any more. Usually I can get a feel for a book in a few hours, but this one didn't seem to be going anywhere. The characters were lack lustre and the main female character was just unpleasant. Angele Masters was the only highlight in this dreary experience, but even her performance couldn't lift this book out of the doldrums. Just not for me.

Character voices

I’ve not finished the book yet, but I’m finding it really hard to deal with the fact that the voice for the 19yo MC is almost the same as the preteen characters. I know she’s meant to be like a street orphan, but she sounds like a character from Oliver Twist

Part of a series

If you’re looking for a one book done this isn’t it. Nothing is really solved, it’s more of an introduction to each character and explaining their mannerisms and story. Good read though

Amazing

Fantastical, a well written, thoroughly descriptive, enrapturing piece. Absolutely loved every chapter. One of my new favourite authors

Great magical Audiobook

Was surprised at how interesting and inviting the story was and has quite a few twists and turns I was definitely not expecting. Would recommend this book for anyone looking for a new magical fantasy adventure book or Audiobook.

Mediocre

The story was ok but it all felt pretty flat. Bleak is an orphaned alcoholic with a tragic past but honestly she could have died anytime and I wouldn't have cared. Same for all the characters. Nothing in this book made me want to laugh or cry or rush on to the next chapter full of anticipation. The dialogue also didn't feel natural.
