Summary

His job is to protect the world. But can he protect his heart?

Protector. Boogeyman. Hellhound. Meshaq has been called it all. As alpha of the hellhounds, his goddess has tasked him with protecting the secrets of the supernatural world. He’s the police of other creatures and the enforcer of the goddess’ rules. If his duty leaves him lonely and longing for a mate and a larger pack, well, the goddess knows the secrets of his heart, and she will grant them if it is her will.

Drew Metcalf is a man on the run. When he finds himself in a biker bar surrounded by leather-wearing giants, he thinks he’s a goner. But there’s something different about the man slinging drinks. He makes Drew feel safe, something he hasn’t felt in a long time.

When Drew and Shaq’s worlds collide, a different kind of magic happens. Shaq doesn’t understand why he’s so drawn to the human whose life is shrouded in mystery and danger. What Shaq does know is that Drew needs his protection. Magical forces are at work, beginning a battle that will require all of Shaq’s skill as the goddess’ champion. With a terrifying threat looming, Shaq and Drew are in danger of losing more than their hearts.

Good until it lost me

I must have read 3 others books in the chosen universe and thus I’m not very familiar with it. And by the end I could definitely tell!

I liked the beginning. I could feel the book was a spin-off but I could still easily follow the story. It was sweet and charming. I mean, give me fated mates every day of the week! Some names/events were mentioned though and I felt a bit like I was missing the backstory which was probably explained in other books. But it wasn’t too much. I understood the story well enough.
But the third last of the book totally lost me. I was going with the flow, in a “I have no idea what’s going on but let’s carry on” way. I felt very confused. It felt like the book was throwing informations at me like I was supposed to understand or at least understand the implied ramifications. And the end was also very abrupt!

In short, I liked the two first third of the book and I think this book must be enjoyed better when being familiar with the other chosen universe books and the ongoing main plot.

As for the narrator, I liked his narration better this time around than in other audiobooks.
