About this listen

'I love it! Hilarious and thought-provoking!' - Fearne Cotton
'A sweet sharp read' - Jessie Burton
'A laugh-out-loud funny book.' - Lucy Diamond

Marianne Power was stuck in a rut. Then one day she wondered: could self-help books help her find the elusive perfect life?

She decided to test one book a month for a year, following their advice to the letter. What would happen if she followed the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People? Really felt The Power of Now? Could she unearth The Secret to making her dreams come true?

What begins as a clever experiment becomes an achingly poignant story. Because self-help can change your life – but not necessarily for the better . . .

Help Me! is an irresistibly funny and incredibly moving audiobook about a wild and ultimately redemptive journey that will resonate with anyone who’s ever dreamed of finding happiness.

Perfect for listeners who enjoyed Everything I know About Love by Dolly Alderton, Mad Girl by Bryony Gordon and Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig.

Listening to the soul searching in this story was like reading something I could have written myself about me. I have lots of self help books in my audible collection, many I listened too. Lots of the same hopes, fears and uncertainty about me, myself and the universe. It was comforting to hear her perspective. She’s much braver, or more desperate perhaps than me, allowing herself to complete the many, often ridiculous challenges. But she is warm hearted, hopeful, loving and loved, and in the end it was all ok. That’s a great ending, not rich, famous, popular whatever, just ok about being ok. It lifted my heart and I would recommend it to everyone because I’m sure she is right when she asserts that everyone has their own stuff going on in their own heads about themselves and it’s really not all about me. Buy it, you won’t regret it.

What a great book, so true to life. I listen or read a self help book, then digest what it says for 5 minutes! And it's onto the next one, but Marianne tests a book a month, putting them in to practice. She shows you how brave you can be and the ups and downs of self help books and the pitfalls of trusting too much in the universe without a back up plan! But prooves after all, happiness is possible when you have the love of your friends and family around you.

I really enjoyed this as I read a deal of self-help books myself. this made me laugh and cry. the only negative was that I dont like bad language and thought this was a bit over-seasoned.

Very personal and vulnerable account of author's journey through self-help classics. It summarised the key points succinctly and saved me time having to read these books myself. I loved that the book was read by the author. I could relate to her story as she kept it honest and authentic. Thank you for sharing Marianne!

For someone who is a self help book junkie, this is one book I could finally relate to

Finally someone saying it as it is!

1. It’s funny. Much of the humour comes from Marianne’s ability to laugh at herself. If you’re writing about developing self-awareness, you’d be forgiven for thinking this crucial, yet many self-help books are so po-faced it’s like wading through porridge.
2. It’s interesting. Marianne Power is intelligent. For all her susceptibility to self-help books, she can spot a ludicrous premise. She thinks The Secret is silly and she’s right.
3. It’s a standalone read so no previous self-help-book experience is needed. I write in a similar genre (though about specific topics like the menopause) so I’ve read most of the books Marianne tries to live by and as most have sold in their millions, the odds are you’ll be familiar with at least one too. But even if you haven’t read any, Marianne’s take is helpful. She provides a good summary of each approach which will save wading through the difficult or daft books on her list and she is far from dismissive of several titles. Her insights are savvy and perceptive.
4. She is honest. Sometimes brutally so. This means ‘Help Me’ is deeper than and more moving than I’ll admit I expected from the brightly coloured cover and some of the other reviews. Marianne Power writes about having a major depressive episode which makes the book much more than just a comic memoir. It will resonate with others who’ve suffered from bouts of poor mental health and I’m sure will prove useful to those caught up in anxiety or depression right now.
5. Help Me is heartwarming, without being twee. The emphasis on friendships and their importance to Marianne is refreshing and, in my experience, bang on.
6. It’s narrated by the author, with interjections from her mum. The mother/daughter relationship added to the intimacy of the audio experience and I relished the short shrift her mother gave to some of Marianne’s more self-indulgent musings. Clearly they’re close but not cloyingly so.

In summary, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
