About this listen

Detective Joseph Easter's daughter discovers a cottage hidden in some trees on a large fenland farm. Someone has been living there.

The farm owner's wife has been receiving sinister pagan artifacts, including a witch's knife. Are they some sort of warning or message?

Joseph and his daughter search the cottage and find an old satchel. Inside are photos of a beautiful girl, Jennifer Cowley. She went missing 15 years ago. She'd been stalked by a young man, who was convicted of her murder, even though her body was never found.

When DI Nikki Galena examines the cottage, she finds something far worse.

And in the satchel is a more recent photo of a girl who looks just like Jennifer.

The man who killed Jennifer is recently out of prison. Has he struck again?

At the same time, DC Cat Cullen and Dave Harris are trying to get evidence against a man who preys on widowed older women. Vernon Deacon is seemingly a pillar of society, with very influential friends. But his victims aren't believed, so their job is not easy.

I really enjoy this series, the consistency of the main characters across the books is reassuring, they feel authentic. Sometimes the story itself strays towards the " hmm really?!" direction but overall it's pretty grounded in a believable reality. Something that was annoying was a very audible whirring from around chapter 28, this is obviously a production issue but rather irksome when this was a purchase rather than a freebie listen.

Tried and trusted formula!

Great story one of the best in the series. It’s was a gripping story. Didn’t want it to finish.

Narrator gives a good performance and there are plenty of characters in this tale for her to interpret. I didn't really keep up with them all.

Good setting which is vital to the story and the plot seems tighter than in past novels in this series. The wood revealing its dark secrets reminds me of childhood stories . This is a story for adults but it is easy listening.

By Book 11, the author spends less time establishing relationships within the team and there is more focus on developing the plot. The narrator also seems more secure with her character voices and D.I. Galena seems more sympathetic as a result.

Best in the series so far

I absolutely love this series. Joy Ellis has smashed it once again. Another excellent storyline which, as always I could not anticipate all the twists. I love Nikki and some of the witty remarks and come backs. One of my favourites in this book was the comment about no one thinking to look for them at a retreat for stressed out witches! I thought this was brilliant and laughed out loud earning me some odd looks from the kids. I love the ties and relationships developed in this series, more so than in the Jackman and Evans series. I am looking forward to delving in to book 12.

Another great listen

I just LOVE this series of Nikky Galena and her team. I am always eager for the next book which can’t come fast enough for me.

And I love the voices the narrator uses.

Another great Nikki Gelena story 🙏

Great story, full of twists and turns, but shocking accents from the narrator. Characters skip from being West Country, to Irish, to Scottish, to totally unrecognisable accents with great speed, which doesn’t do justice to Joy Ellis’ talented writing. I can’t understand why the producers continue to use this narrator, her mispronunciation of words, place names and accents is so distracting and irritating.

Amazing Story
