Summary

Gustavo Tiberius is not normal. He knows this. Everyone in his small town of Abby, Oregon, knows this. He reads encyclopedias every night before bed. He has a pet ferret called Harry S. Truman. He owns a video rental store that no one goes to. His closest friends are a lady named Lottie with drag queen hair and a trio of elderly Vespa riders known as the We Three Queens.

Gus is not normal. And he's fine with that. All he wants is to be left alone.

Until Casey, an asexual stoner hipster and the newest employee at Lottie's Lattes, enters his life. For some reason, Casey thinks Gus is the greatest thing ever. And maybe Gus is starting to think the same thing about Casey, even if Casey is obsessive about Instagramming his food.

But Gus isn't normal and Casey deserves someone who can be. Suddenly wanting to be that someone, Gus steps out of his comfort zone and plans to become the most normal person ever.

After all, what could possibly go wrong?

Enjoyable book

This probably would have been a 5 star book as I love a-typical characters in books and liked Gus, but I couldn’t fully get into the dopey slightly dim stoner type character who was Casey. Don’t get me wrong, their relationship was sweet and I liked how different they were to each other, but I think I like a bit more mental spark to characters in books. Great story, though! TJ Klune is very talented and I love many of their books so will definitely get more of them.

TJ is a true Genius!

Oh Gustavo, what can I say.....I was rooting for him from the beginning. What a fabulous character and a super human being. Casey is so imperfectly perfect for him and their crowd of friends are lovably bonkers! A fantastic supporting cast.

TJ’s character development is second to none, he takes you through every emotion whilst you fall in love with everyone involved. I gobble up everything he writes, each book or series completely different but with that TJ excellence shining through.

Derrick McClain is a new narrator for me and I thought he was fabulous. His stoned and sweet Casey voice was fab.

I’m desperately now waiting for the release of How to be a Movie Star which I know will be another corker!

Hooked

Quirky, warm, funny, mad, unexpected.
Loved it. This would be the third book of TJ Klune so I think it's safe to say I'm hooked.

Fallen in love with Audible!

This is the first review I've left.
The handful of audio books I've listen to before this had left me feeling that audio books weren't for me, the narrators weren't reading it right, or there voices were monotonous. I've tried different genres, nothing seemed to fit.

This book on the other hand was fantastic and the narration was PERFECT.

I fell in love with Gus, Casey, the queens, Lottie and Pastor Tommy.

The inclusion of the "Internet" was a stroke of genius in my opinion and absolutely hilarious, I was laughing out loud whilst walking my dogs getting funny looks off passers by.

The story itself of an Ace relationship, I thought, was beautifully portrayed and left me with the Feels :-)

Amazingly Amusing Amorous situations

Absolutely loved it, couldn't stop myself listening to this very compelling story.
The narrator was on point to pull off all these diverse characters. My favorite parts were involving the recorded calls and both Mitzi and Mytzy. Also, whenever Gus was going 'what the hell' and 'oh my god' which he does quite a bit.

Hilarious, heartwarming, and hard not to love!

Let me start by saying that I absolutely love this audiobook, and I listen to it more often than most would consider healthy — in other words, it's my comfort book.

This book ticks every box for me, from the good representation, characters, story, and pacing, to the delightful subversion of a particularly tedious plot cliché at the climax of the story. What a vibrant little fictional town Abby is, and what a heartwarming and cozy love story takes place within it. To me, there's never been a book so easy to love.

As a non-straight asexual, I'm overjoyed by the representation in this book, and I find it to be very accurate to my own experiences as an abnormal, weird, and strange asexual in a non-straight relationship. Furthermore, the comedy just speaks to me. On my first listen, I quickly learned not to listen to this audiobook in public — there are entire chapters that still make me cackle even to this day. Delightfully absurd.
One of the biggest draws for me that keeps me coming back to this book is Gus. Never before have I related to a character so much. I'm not sure whether Gus was written to be autistic-coded, but as an autistic adult I can safely say that he's the closest a character has ever gotten to my own personal flavour of neurodivergent oddity, and I love him for it.

This is a lovely listen, and I highly recommend it. The only critique I'd give is the overuse of the word "said". As long as you can tolerate the occasional long stretches where every line of dialogue ends with "… (name) said," you'll be golden.
