Summary

From the international number one best-selling author of the DCI Ryan mysteries.

Hysteria is the second instalment in Ross' brand-new Dr Alex Gregory series, narrated by actor Hugh Dancy.

Recently returned from his last case in Ireland, elite forensic psychologist and criminal profiler Dr Alexander Gregory receives a call from the French police that he can’t ignore. It’s Paris fashion week, and some of the world’s most beautiful women are turning up dead, their faces slashed in a series of frenzied attacks while the world’s press looks on.

Amidst the carnage, one victim has survived, but she’s too traumatised to talk. Without her help, the police are powerless to stop the killer before he strikes again - can Gregory unlock the secrets of her mind before it’s too late? Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set in a spectacular Parisian landscape.

Bit disappointed

I was so looking forward to this second book in L J Ross’s new series about Dr Alexander Gregory but I’m afraid to say that it just didn’t grip me. Fairly early in the book I guessed what might have happened (I won’t go into detail because of spoilers). I didn’t guess the whole of it but was right on three or four points. Hugh Dancy is an excellent narrator, his French accent is really good but I found myself zoning out and having to recap having lost track of the storyline. I will try the next one which I believe is due out in February but hope that DCI Ryan will be back with his team in a new, full length book. I’m afraid Dr Gregory is coming in second best for me. Sorry !

Brilliant

I believe this to be the best of all his books I have read so far. A complex story based around a profiler with a great talent for his work. The author shows a great understanding for the complexities of the mind .

So different

LJ Ross so very different from our usual meeting although Alexabdet does sound very familiar when discribed!!! An excellent mystery with a twist in ots tale and enough red hetrings to please everyone. The European touch just did it for me!! Well done Jo!!

Good until the final 90 minuts

It was a five star listen for most of the novel with clearly defined characters and a good story that kept me listening. However, the explanation as who who had perpetrated one of the crimes is too contrived and clinically implausible. Pity as I'd enjoyed the first book featuring Alexander Gergory and thought it would be a series to follow.
The narrator is excellent

Great story once I got into it.

Probably because I am hooked on the DI Ryan series, I struggled to identify with the characters initially. Once I got the hang of it I was away! Already have the next in the series ready for tomorrow night.

Disappointing, especially the narration

As books go, the story was fine. It didn’t exactly enthral but was interesting enough to keep me going to the end, However, the narration was a disappointment to say the least. I had expected better of Hugh Dancy. There was very little change in voice to distinguish different characters and, worse, every sentence, every phrase ended on a downward cadence. Many individual words too. Everything was drawn out and very slow. The result was a rather depressing listen. On the plus side he has an excellent French accent.
