Un filo ideale collega "Delitto e castigo", "L'idiota", "I demoni" e giunge a "I fratelli Karamazov", che riprende e conclude tutti i temi affrontati nei libri precedenti, in particolare il dramma spirituale scaturito dal conflitto morale tra fede, dubbio, ragione e libero arbitrio.

È ritenuto il vertice della sua produzione letteraria, un capolavoro della letteratura dell'Ottocento e di ogni tempo. Pubblicato a puntate dal 1879, si concluse pochi mesi prima della morte dell'autore.

Secondo l'originale progetto dell'autore, la storia dei fratelli Karamazov doveva essere la prima parte di una complessa e vasta biografia di Aleksej, uno dei fratelli (ispirato alla figura del filosofo Solovev, amico dell'autore): l'opera però, dopo cinque anni, due di studio e tre di lavoro, rimase incompiuta.
