THE TOP FIVE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

In 1914, war feels far away to Henry Gaunt and Sidney Ellwood. They're too young to enlist, and anyway, Gaunt is fighting his own private battle - an all-consuming infatuation with the dreamy, poetic Ellwood - not having a clue that his best friend is in love with him too.

When Gaunt's mother asks him to enlist, he signs up immediately, relieved to escape his overwhelming feelings. But Ellwood and their classmates soon follow him to the front. Ellwood and Gaunt find love in the trenches – but just as war brought them together, it can tear them apart…
An epic, unforgettable love story between two soldiers in the First World War, In Memoriam is a breath-taking debut.

Beautiful and devastating

I can’t stop thinking about this book. It was so beautifully written. The character depth and detail was amazing. The relationships between the boys were so engrossing and believable. The depiction of war was horrendous and emotional. I cannot recommend this book enough. I actually went back and started listening to it again from the start as soon as I finished it as I wanted to get all the details of the characters that I may have missed at the beginning. I will be thinking about this book for a long time.

A wonderful book

Despite all the novels, poems and histories I’ve read about WW1, and all the films and documentaries I’ve seen, I’m still profoundly moved and shocked by the appalling futility and slaughter of those four years, more than a hundred years ago. This wonderful book should be required reading or listening. I found myself exclaiming out loud at the horror and pathos as I listened. Highly recommended

Spectacular narrator

Evocative of pat barker and Sebastian faulkes. Beautifully written and truly excellent narration. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Astonishingly good.

An unbearably sad love story, beautifully and movingly read for audio by the narrator, that explores the ways in which duty, patriotism, imperialism and tradition betrayed and killed so many young men.

Brilliant and moving story

This was the most evocative book I have read so far this year - it was so good that I both listened to the book on audible and also read it.

Heartbreaking and uplifting

An upsetting read at times but I have never been this addicted to a book. There are beautiful depictions of forbidden romance, strained friendships, class differences and the horror of war. The writer's expression of character's motivations and inner thoughts shows a deep understanding of human relationships. Special mention to the fantastic narration, his depictions of these private school boys brings them all to life

Wonderfully written and read

An amazing and moving book which gave so much background and feeling to what happened in WW1, highly recommended and exceptionally immersive listen. Well done to the reader.

Outstanding, beautiful, harrowing

In Memorium is everything Ive always wanted from a novel in the trenches. I feel Ive waiting my whole life for the brutality of this love story. Christopher Coulson did a fantastic job.

A must-read/listen!

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Narration was also excellent! I bought the physical book and couldn’t put it down so had to get the audiobook to keep it going.

Excellent Book

This is the best book I have read for a long time. The writing style is excellent and the storyline is both harrowing and moving. The harshness of war and the sensitivity of love brought together.
This will become a classic.
