About this listen

1917. Private Daniel Dawkins fights at Messines Ridge and Passchendaele. He writes home to his true love, Joyce, but reveals little of his extreme bravery, his kindness, his loyalty to his comrades and the horrors they experience on the Western Front.

1920. Captain Peter Harding is tasked with a secret mission to assist in the selection of a body dug up from the battlefields of Flanders to be buried in Westminster Abbey as the 'Unknown Warrior'.

2011. Sarah Harding discovers Daniel’s letters and Peter's diaries. Together with historian James Marchant, she pieces together the hidden truth behind the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and must decide what to do with it.

I have just finished listening to this book and enjoyed it so much that a few of the men in my family will be getting this for their Christmas present!

Robert Newcome’s book is an excellent read, but if you prefer listening to a book as I do, Paul Thornley’s reading of it holds you until the last sentence.

Great Christmas Present

Set across different time frames this book retells the horrors of the First World War and an imagined story as to who the unknown warrior is who rests in Westminster Abbey may be.

The book draws you in and time flies as you become invested in the characters either real or fictional.

I so enjoyed this book.

A wonderful book

Fascinating fiction. Enjoyed every chapter. The voice of the narrator was gripping. Story made me swallow hard a few times, but I didn't cry.

Gripping to the end

I enjoyed all of this -- the story, the characters, the narration. It keeps you hooked to the very end, which I did not, and could not, have guessed. Loved it.

Fabulous book

this had me hooked from the first words to the very last, i don't know where 14 hours have gone listening to this, in my opinion Paul Thornley is one of the best narrators, & makes it come to life. you wont be disappointed !

What a poignant moving story brilliantly written by Robert Newcome, narrated so expertly as usual by Paul Thornley. One of the few books I would listen to again. Highly recommended

Incredible listen

Arguably the best book
.The author had me hooked from the first line and with Paul Thornley as the narrator with his wide range of voices and accents is probably the best in the business .
I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I not going say anything about story, but for 14 hours it had me hooked, and the last 2 minutes well what can I say the hairs on my neck stood up

Absolutely brilliant

I’ve always been intrigued by the unknown worrier, this book takes you on a journey as if your there, and makes you think about yourself. Didn’t want it to finish, temped to mention parts but that would spoil it for others.

What a great read
